Much of the strength of the Australian dollar comes from exports to China, much of whose exports supply the US and Europe. It'll be a domino effect and nobody will escape it. I think ultimate reslience will be found in the ability for countries to fend for themselves. China is a net food importer as is Russia. The US is by far the biggest food producer in the world. I have no idea how Australia fares in food production. When it comes to energy the US would do very well. In a depressed economy our demand for fuel would drop enough that domestic sources would supply us. Domestic production has been rising at a rate that if it continues would make us oil independent in a couple of decades anyway. Natural gas is so plentiful here that that would be no concern. We hold the largest coal reserves in the world. In a depressed economy there is really nothing the US needs that it doesn't already have. |
