On the morning of December 21, 2012, a “planetary alignment” of sorts will befall our planet, in conjunction with the ending of the Mayan long count calendar.

The winter solstice happens at exactly 11:11 AM GMT, which is Greenwich mean Time, and this will be 6:11 AM Eastern time, 5:11 AM central time, 4:11 AM mountain time and 3:11 AM Pacific time. Now if you live at the eastern end of your time zone the sun probably arises a little bit earlier than it does at the western edge of the time zone you live, so check your local television station weatherman, and adjust accordingly.

Probably the best place to view what will happen Celestially will be somewhere in the central time zone of the U.S., but I would say anywhere from there across to the Pacific Ocean, the ability to watch what will happen just before sunrise will be fantastic.

I live in the pacific time zone, so lets use that as the barometer. The planet Venus will start things off, and rise above the horizon at 2:46 AM. It will be relatively easy to see in the black predawn sky, and this is several hours before Santa.

So at 3:11 AM, the winter solstice will arrive, and the longest night of the year will be over. This also means that every day now becomes longer until the summer solstice on June 21, 2013 when it will then become shorter etc. etc. Mercury will rise at 3:23 AM, and for those of you further east in the Pacific time zone, it will be visible even with the ones increasing light.

Now out here in the Pacific time zone, especially in Nevada where I live, there are mountains all around, as I live in the Las Vegas Valley, surrounded by 6000 foot high mountains minimum. So we will have to wait a little bit longer for the sunrise to creep over Frenchman’s mountain. It will arrive 19 minutes later at 6:48 AM Pacific time.

By this time the sky will be so bright that both Mercury and Venus will not be visible to the naked eye, however they will continue their journey across the sky. These sometimes planet Pluto, depending on when you were born and if you are a scientist or not is next up, is never visible to the naked eye, but will rise at 7:03 AM, moving across the sky just as Mercury and Venus have, and finally Mars will arise at 8:24 AM, with the sun aligned almost directly in between Venus and Mars.

And finally the moment we’ve all been waiting for, at 10:05 AM, the sun will be in the exact center of our Milky Way galaxy, what is referred to as the Galactic equator. As the planets make their heavenly ascension across the sky, at roughly 5:44 PM the sun will set, and then at 7:37 PM Mars will become visible against the night sky while it sinks below the horizon marking the end of the planetary journey across our planet on this fantastic day. I should think the site of Mars setting over the Pacific Ocean will be the most beautiful picture ever taken,
