When we die we learn how we were perceived by the others

When we die our soul will not only experience the life it lived in this meat avatar, but it will also experiences how other souls were influenced by its actions.

You will feel how your spouse felt when you two were arguing. You will feel the pain you caused to others by being abusive. You will feel the grief experienced by your loved ones when you died. You will feel the agony of each living being that was killed in order to produce meat for you. You will feel the death of every ant you stepped on while you were alive. You will feel how the grass experienced you walking on it. You will not be spared from feeling even the tiniest effect your actions caused directly or indirectly (imagine the pain and fear the souls of Hitler or Stalin had to experience after death!).

As painful as it will be, remember that it is not a punishment, but a learning experience. Your soul needs this experience to grow into a more empathic and loving soul.
