Weird happenings this am.
An hour ago, I was standing by the counter in the kitchen and heard a loud "Pop" immediately in front of me. I thought the coffee maker and the microwave had snapped a breaker, but no. Nothing. I have no idea what made the loud sound. No holes in the window or anything.
Just now a big assed bird flew past my window, and then landed in the tree just outside my window. It was big as an eagle, but I couldn't identify it. Mostly black with brownish feathers laced in. It stretched it's wings several times, standing up with wings spread, like an eagle might, and it was 3 ft or more from tip to tip. It had kind of a turkey head, but turkeys don't soar like he did when he left. I've never seen a bird that big around my house, that close. Lots of geese fly by, but they never land in my yard or tree.

He came back. I guess it's an eagle because it's just soaring over the field in the front of the house.

It could be. That's sort of what came to mind.

This is western AR. There are lots of birds around here. There is a flock of large black birds, like ravens maybe, that come to Ozark every winter and nest in two old trees on the east side of town by a gar creek that runs into the Arkansas river. They circle over the general area of the town and nest in the two trees toward evening. They'll leave with spring. I would guess that there are around 300 of them.

Re: Weird happenings this am.
Most likely a vulture.

They are actually a GOOD sign I found out when I saw one. Quite poignant on this of all days...

I just thought I would share this.

A few minutes ago I was out on my deck watching the water when I saw these two huge birds a few houses down.

I thought they were bald eagles because of their size and eagles are prevalent on the Bay.

I watched them for a bit trying to figure out what they were, when one of them drifted toward me.

It came to a complete stop right above my head, showing me the full majesty of it's wings.

It hovered there for at least 20 or so seconds in pretty breezy conditions.

It was then I realized I was looking at a vulture.

At first I thought, uh oh...vulture, this can't be good..

But when I came back inside I decided to look up the totem animal significance of the 'vulture'.

This area use to be settled by Native Americans.

When i looked up the meaning I was pleasantly surprised.

I think some of you might be as well...

Vulture-Buzzard:
[link to www.starstuffs.com]

"Buzzard or Vulture teaches the power of purification of the mind, body and spirit.

Vulture aids accomplishing tasks through great patience and vision, using your sense of smell and discernment, and how to glide and soar with your own energy.

He teaches efficiency in actions and promises that changes are imminent.

He shows how to restore harmony of thoughts and feelings so one can reach new heights with little effort.

Buzzards will aid in uncovering truths, clarifying previous conceptions, and allow to see and hear subtle hidden qualities using intuition and awareness.

Buzzard can teach confidence and the ability to stand with dignity and soar with clarity and purpose. He shows how to seek a new and heightened vision while increasing sensitivity.

It is time to soar above your perceived limitations. Are you currently undergoing an internal death and rebirth cycle? Are you ready to assert your actions from your ideas?

Buzzard will aid in transforming knowledge to bring the unconscious to conscious and teach how to soar above it and bring the transformation you are needing at this time.

Are you ready for these lessons of awakening?"

turkey vultures do a morning 'sunrise salute,' that is to say they will find a nice high point and stretch their wings for quite a while every morning to limber up.

That's what he was doing. He had his back to the sun and it looked like he was warming in the sun. He stood there for over a minute and I managed to find my camera and took some pictures, but I really don't know how to post them.

I'll sic the goat on them. There was a goat and a cat near the front door. I was wondering if he would be stupid enough to attack the goat, or if he was going to go for the cat. Neither, apparently.
There are lots of other critters around that he might have seen. Possoms, raccoons, armadillos.

My friend in Hot Springs, AR had the same thing happen to her recently. It was what the east coast calls a Turkey Vulture. In AR they are mostlt just called vultures and they are huge and ugly. They seem to slow down a bit when they are cold and hungry.
