Need help. My son's step daughter's child is failing to thrive and has from the beginning.
He is just now able to raise his head. He is a happy, curious little guy who does not complain. He is on both formula and breast fed and throws up each. They have put him on meds for acid reflux as his MRI suggest he may be suffering from that.

Any suggestions of help would be greatly appreciated and thank you for any assistance. He is a little trooper.

Prayers are welcome as well and his name is Peyton.

Acid reflux is BS.

He probably needs more HCL in his stomach.

Check it out, Mick, and all the best!

my youngest son had acid reflux. we were able to help him keep his formula down by feeding him while he was in an upright position. we also kept him sitting upright for at least 30 minutes after feedings, and we fed him smaller amounts more frequently.

Dead Doctors Don't Lie

Call Youngevity, Dr. Wallach's camp.

This child has a nutritional deficiency for one reason or another.

Act now, as the phone call is free and the supplements are not expensive. Dr. Wallach is all over youtube.

You'd be surprised how common vitamin D deficiency can be.

Re: Need help. My son's step daughter's child is failing to thrive and has from the beginning.
Perhaps a little ginger tea with some sugar in it? Ginger will alkalize his stomach acid somewhat and the sweetness of the sugar will give him a little energy. If the ginger makes his tummy feel better he may be able to keep the formula down longer.

You can make your own ginger tea, or buy some crystalized ginger and soak in warm water for awhile, then puree & strain. Then dilute so that its not too powerful. Add sugar as needed.

You could also use fresh ginger but its much more powerful, so make sure you taste it first before giving it to him -- it might be too spicy.

My friend's baby had problems like that. It turned out that the baby was allergic to dairy and soy. My friend had to stop eating dairy and soy until her baby stopped breast-feeding. Children can also be intolerant to gluten (found in wheat, barley, and rye).

Right. What momma eats baby eats.
Does momma drink sodas, eat processed foods...then the baby is getting all of it...
and that is really bad. The child could have constant problems.

Yup. I learned the hard way when my newborn baby got jaundice years ago. That was quite a scare and my wife was freaking out. Had to do light therapy. My wife was taking prenatal vitamins but I was confused why it happened so I did a lot of researching and found out that pregnant mothers need 4000 IU a day compared to 400 IU that was recommended! Crazy.

Thinking back, we got really sick from some kind of virus when my wife was pregnant and it turns out that taking vitamin D at the right dosage helps prevent that. Sucks. It had to be the worst case I've ever experienced.

Sending up prayers for baby Peyton. Mother's milk is the best and easiest for a baby's body to process. If the mother is eating good, wholesome high nutrient foods, the baby should thrive. She should avoid spicy foods, alcohol, and junk food. Prayers and energy sent for Peyton.

We avoided soy based milk at all cost and some diary based formula depending on what was in it.

What we used - [link to www.amazon.com]

Either the wife need to take 10,000 IU of vitamin D to be able to produce vitamin D rich breast milk or get vitamin D supplement dropper for the baby. Vitamin D is a god send. All of sudden, my kid didn't get sick very often or got over it a lot more quickly.

Re: Need help. My son's step daughter's child is failing to thrive and has from the beginning.
We don't really have enough information.

How old is he? Just now being able to raise his head doesn't tell us anything without knowing that :)

Why is he on formula? This is not a criticism - the reason matters for making suggestions.

What all have they looked into? How is his overall muscle tone? Has he had an evaluation with a speech pathologist or lactation consultant to determine if he's having feeding problems? Because if he's having motor delays, they need to be looking at congenital/developmental causes.

What's his growth curve like?

I'd suggest an elimination diet for the mom (and hypoallergenic formula if the formula can't be eliminated temporarily) if acid reflux seems to be the main issue. Start by eliminating dairy (ALL of it, even the stuff hidden in processed foods in trace amounts), then the big 8 allergens. Mom should keep a food diary and see if anything in particular seems to be linked with issues. You should see improvement within a few days if something in the diet is the cause.

The goal should be to get him off of the meds. They are not harmless.

Keeping him upright after meals (in a baby carrier, for example), may help.

Back in the 70s when my mom had her first baby, doctors told her to drink lots of milk while breastfeeding. I just had a baby not too long ago, and all my doctors told me NOT to drink milk while breastfeeding because it causes colic in a baby. Sure enough, my mom's first kid was a very colicy baby.

Re: Need help. My son's step daughter's child is failing to thrive and has from the beginning.
All good suggestions here.
Particularly the idea of feeding in an upright position and remaining in that position for a length of time afterwards.
We had an infant that took it a step further and, after the bottle or breast, had to be held while the adult was standing also and holding the infant under the arms and having the infant body completely straight, kinda dangling. She experienced immediate relief from fussiness in this odd position.
Also, look into Goats Milk. While breast milk is the best, this method puts a lot of stress on Mom. And it is hard to tell how much they are getting per feeding. Prayers for your litttle one.

He's an infant and doesnt drink ginger tea or need vit D! These wont cause problems keeping food down. Good grief.

Take him to a pediatric chiropractor. Birth trauma can cause a range of problems, both mechanical and neurological.

Baby may be allergic to both soy and dairy. Try organic coconut water, very easy to digest and has all required nutrients, fats, protein.

When bottle feeding, make sure bottle nipple doesn't have too big an opening. Make the baby work a little to suck out the liquid, eating too fast can cause regurgitation.

Baby's age? you did not disclose.
