That is a common misconception that they are a tribe or even a culture. Maya or the Mayan's are actually a group of people's and combined cultures who speak various languages:

There are pyramids and ancient cities ALL OVER the place down there. (most still covered in jungle over-growth) It is amazing and get's you really thinking. Add in that with the fact the folks are hard-working, respectful and loving makes it hard not to care about them.
