Every citizen on the planet needs a fully automatic rifle.

Preferably an AK-74 with 3 extra loaded mags.

You can dump an AK-74 in a paddy field, or a shithouse, for months, and it will work the moment you take it out.

You can't say the same for the M4, or M16.

Automatic weapons have not been involved in any of these shootings.

These are standard rifles, just like any other magazine loading rifle. They simply have AR style rail and accessory mounting systems. They are not and were never intended to be military use. They are standard semi automatic guns.

To get an automatic or suppressed weapon in the us requires a special tax stamp permit and approval of the local sheriffs dept.

The ban is unnecessary, the only argument possible in any sane environment is requiring permits for extended capacity magazines.

A pistol works wonders, when you get "up close, and personal".

Automatic weapons are very hard to obtain in the States (unless you are law enforcement / military).

Semi-automatics are very useful here though. Criminals tend to run in packs or gangs here. If my family is attacked I want several shots at my disposal.

We're not really 'uptight' about gun control as much as we are adamant that it is the linchpin to the entire Bill of Rights. Once that goes, we have no defense against a tyrannical government. This ideology has been bred into our way of thinking, culturally, for several generations. It's ingrained in our thinking and most of us (I think/hope) are willing to die for this right alone.

You can own an automatic rifle but it takes a class 3 license which involves approval from local sheriff, fingerprints, passport photos and significant check by govt. expect to wait about 9 months after purchase to actually get it in your hand IF you get approval. What you are talking about is a semi automatic rifle. You still have to pull the trigger for each shot. This require standard background check typically including social security number before they give you possession. I have been at the counter and seen other customers turned away because some flag was raised.
