Read the ingredients list - in general, the fewer the ingredients, the better it is likely to be for you. Also, the less processed (from it's natural state) the better it is. Grocery items with shorter shelf life are generaly better for you as they is less likely to be full of chemical preservers...

Supermarket food that is better for you:

Fruit and Veg (organics are best, but the 'normal' ones are ok if you have limitations on buying organics). Fruit and Veg that is in it's natural state is best - not chopped into salads or soup mix or puree'd to death in jars or tubs. Find out the origin if you can and try to buy produce that is at least grown in your state or country. I work in Fruit and Veg dpt at my local supermarket and I can tell you that whatever is sprayed onto out of season produce from overseas to keep if fresh in transit gives me hives every time I handle it. Urgh!

Buy your procude in SEASON! This is so improtant and the number of people who have no idea when something is grown locally astounds me. If it is not in season, it has been kept in storage since picking, and for some items, such as apples, pears and stonefriuts, they may have been kept in cold storage for up to 18 months!
Basic guides to what is in season can be found via google search, but as a general rule are as follows:

Summer Produce:
Stonefruits
Mangoes and tropical fruits
Berries
Melons
Avocadoes
Zucchini and squash
Beans
Asparagus
Grapes
Eggplant

Autumn Produce
Apples
Pears
Pumpkins
Green leafy Veg

Winter Produce
Most items in supermarkets during winter are imported from overseas or other areas of your country as this is the quietest growing season

Root vegetables such as parsnip, swede and turnips
Celeraic
Peas

Spring Produce
Potatoes
Green leafy veg
Strawberries
Carrots
Celery
Spinach
Lettuce
Onions


Other items available in the supermarket that are better for you:

Sourdough wholegrain bread, preferably baked in store
Antipasta (olives and things in jars) - make sure they are in quality olive oil
Canned foods (as opposed to canned meals) - but be aware that the lining in the tins is made of plastic that leaches into the food over time
Organic/ free range meat. NOTE - commercial roast chickens and pork are not good for you: they are injected with an oil/water mix that hydrates the meat so it stays juicy and tender... god knows what is in it!
Pasta (check the ingredients list - should really only have flour and water in it)
Nuts and seeds
Jam (check no HFCS in it)
seed and nut butters (but check labels if oils have been added)
Rolled oats and other rolled grains such as quinoa and rice (for breakfast cereals)
Fair Trade coffee
Organic Herbal tea
Agave or rice syrup
Flash frozen vegetables
Dried beans and lentils
Tofu
Greek style yoghurt (but check the ingredients listing for thickening agents)
Olive oil, avocado oil, peanut oil, sesame oil, macadamia oil


That should help people with where to start. At first it seems like there is nothing you can eat that is good for you, but you will be surprised even if you can only eliminate one thing at at time, like HFCS or Hydrogenated oil.

For those who claim they are pressed for time to prepare good food, the best places to find good pre prepared food is a sandwich/ salad bar where you can build a salad to order or a vegan/ vegetarian restaraunt. A good salad will take less than 15 minutes to prepare and should be enough to fill you if you include a grain like quinoa or beans such as chickpeas. If all else fails - shove some fruits and veg into a juicer and have your food raw!

There are links that show hydrogenated oils cause diabetes, which I have. I started looking at labels and was shocked it is the first ingredient in peanut butter, here have a nice glob of Crisco with that!

It's in nearly all prepared foods, even bread. The only way to avoid it is to cook everything yourself. Logically speaking, there is no reason to hydrogenate any oils to cook or bake with. They don't need to be solid. IIRC, margarine was invented as an industrial lubricant.

in one year most of trans fat will leave body

Based on years of independent personal research, I can say I wholeheartedly agree with the message of this article.

Neurotransmitters (the chemicals that give you pleasure, excitement, peace, love, etc) and their receptors are made out of fatty acids...trans fat acids are, literally, physically the wrong shape due to the hydrogenation process. When there are no good fats available, your body tries to construct this stuff with misshapen hydrogenated fatty acids, and unsurprisingly, that doesn't work very well.

Its one of the biggest causes of all sorts of mental/emotional problems in Western society.

I recommend avoiding hydrogenated oils entirely (which sadly means no eating out unless the restaurant is very honest with you) as well as supplementing high quality fish oil as well as chia seeds, the latter of which can repair your gut fatty acid receptor sites, a tidbit I learned on this very website! (search for the thread here about chia seeds from a few months ago)

About 18 months ago, I was walking my local supermarket when I had a mini revelation:

There is very little to almost no actual food in the supermarket.

It is all processed, manufactured 'product'.

Even actual food is shrink wrapped and coated in wax.

True lard makes the best pie crust. My Grandmother always cooked with it, she never owned a can of Crisco. It is extremely hard to shop for good food on a limited budget. Thanks for posting this thread OP.
