Re: Call of Duty for a 5 year old - WTF?
What kind of message does it send though?

We just had a mass shooting, yet we tell them it's okay to shoot people in a virtual world.

I agree that it doesn't necessarily make you a bad or violent person.I was playing doom and rise of the triad at maybe 8-9 and I'm a super easy going anti-violence guy but still I don't think it's a good idea.Things are a little different now.

Everybody plays these games now it's huge, and everybody should be well aware that we have a problems with gun violence that need fixing.Letting children playing call of duty isn't the way to fix that.

Children today are corrupt as funk, things that disturbed me as a kid like seeing someone die in a movie are no longer disturbing to this children some might actually find it funny or cool, not only are they exposed to violence, drugs, and sex in this types of video games, but they also see the same thing on movies/tv shows, and music.

Op, you're a bit more old-fashioned than me, but I do agree with you.

I've played all sorts of shooting games, didn't start till I was 14, and graphics were so poor and cartoony back then, it couldn't have the same extreme effect of desensitization as these new shooting games.

I'm 30 now, and playing one of the recent COD's I was alarmed for the youth of today, some of the scenes in these games, and with Hi-Def TV's and incredibly detailed and life-like graphics, I just can't imagine how much it fucks with children's emotional development.
 Quoting: FuzzleFace

I think you've hit the nail on the head. I used to play games in the arcades when I was younger but there's a world of difference between the likes of Street Fighter and Double Dragon in the old days compared to the brutal realism of COD/Battlefield 3 etc.. today.

There's also a big difference between a 12/13 year old playing it and a 5 year old who is still developing basic life concepts. I'm certainly not the type of person who thinks these games will turn people into murderers or spree killers (I played lots of video games well into my twenties and haven't even had so much as a parking ticket) but I do worry about the effect these games could have on such young, developing minds.

AS a teacher and parent, I can tell you that this is very common nowadays.

I guess that's why dipshit parents take their babies and 5 year old to a midnite screening of Batman, or take 3 months old to a restaurant, or let their 2 year olds play with an app on their phone. These aren't parents.

Do you think rating systems actually protect children and young kids?

Ever heard of this thing called the world wide web. Children nowadays have access to porn, violence, among other disturbing things.

They can also access the same R rated movies.

But back to the topic, it is pretty strange for a 5 year old child to get a Call of Duty game.

Nintendo Wii has some awesome games for kids, parents should really pick appropriate ones. And when they are a little more older, parents should learn about controlling content.

That still wouldn't protect them. They can go out and access the net on another network.

Strange times.

The 'old days' also had games like Mortal Kombat where you could rip someone's head and spine off as a 'finishing move'. Games like "Killer Instinct'... Also, remember how popular a game like Wolfenstein 3D was on the PC? How was that game any different than modern day Call of Duty? It was a very popular first-person shooter that featured blood/gore and your character shooting/killing other humans. We were exposed to the same type of games that exist today, just with graphics that were appropriate for the technological age of the time.

I don't see any issue with the games themselves. If there is any 'issue' it is the lackadaisical nature of parenting today that enables young children to have access to material/content that should be reserved for adults.

It influences their brains in a way that is not appropriate in the formative years. It basically is child abuse and neglect to allow a child that age to play COD. Period.

Why you so butthurt over my post bra?

'fucking Wolftenstein'

???

Does that game upset you that you have to precede it with 'fucking'?

Maybe you should watch a few YouTube videos of the game to spark your memory of how much gore and blood there was. That game was every bit as realistic to us in the mid-90's context as current games are now to gamers, it's all relative to the respective time period that the technology yields. We loved those games then because they were more realistic than anything that came before it - just like people feel now with games like Call Of Duty... In another 5-10 years there will be even more realistic simulations/games. Are you going to maintain the same butthurt attitude in the future and proclaim that these next generation games on the horizon are completely different from 'fucking Call of Duty' from 10 years prior? Hopefully you get the point.

this.

this is the best argument for the pro video game retards

"i played violent video games when i was young and i turned out fine"

first off, that's not true, the vast majority of video game addicted losers in our society are completely fucked up in the head and have all sorts of mental, psychological, social disorders, and physical problems such as illness and disease, obesity, ect,

no, I'm not solely blaming video games for their fucked up lives, but they play a MAJOR role

secondly, in your video game playing brain damaged minds, because you're not out there shooting people, that means violent video games are ok for 5 year olds? there's people that watch snuff films and torture films and violent porn and guess what idiots, they're not out there shooting people either, so is it ok to show that stuff to 5 years olds also?

according to a videogametards logic its ok to show that stuff to kids

the mass produced video games are all part of an agenda to destroy the moral fabric of society, goes right along with the TV programming, the music programming, the movies, media, and got news for you dumb vidtards, the same people making this tv and media shit are making these video games

100 years ago kids were growing fucking food and hunting fucking bears all day, now all you fat fucks are sitting around playing cod all day drinking fluoridated water in your dooky stained underpants like a drooling mentally disturbed fuck up

I picked my 5 year old daughter up from school today and was chatting to one of the other parents about Christmas and holiday plans. He started talking about presents and said he's just bout COD Black Ops 2 for his 5 year old son!

When I questioned him on it, he was pretty much "what's the problem? It's only a game". Am I seriously old fashioned and out of touch or has the world gone crazy? I'm knocking on for 40 and still play and enjoy the odd game from time to time but I really do believe that an 18 cert game is 18 for a reason. The experience is so graphic. visceral and much more involving than a movie.

I'm sure this same dad wouldn't let his son watch an 18 cert movie, so why are games seen so differently?

This is more disturbing than any gratuitous violence I've ever witnessed in a video game. This kid is getting his jollies off torturing a 6 year old. Pretty sick.

Parents that let their kids play these online games are either absent or fucked in the head.

5 yr old playing "Call of Duty" = Future Adam Lanza
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 26735705

My 7 year old plays COD, as well as a barrage of other games most would see completely unfit for a child. However, he's no future Adam Lanza, or any other psychopath/patsy you can pull out of the bag.

My children all receive tons of attention and love from me. I teach them the importance of humanity, and moral values. They understand the value of life. They also have inherited empathy and rely a lot on their gut feelings and conscience. I have no fears of my sons or daughters becoming rogue killers in any way.

If anything, because they're allowed to play such games and because I keep things real with them and have given them a solid moral base, they would be the ones who would stand up to a guy on a rampage with a gun in their school and try to save the lives of others. My children would be the ones who knew to think and act quickly in that kind of a situation.

You can't attribute people doing the things they do on video games alone. There are a number of things that can add up to make the attacker personality. Lack of parental guidance being the biggest one. True chemical imbalances within the brain. Broken families. Being severely abused as a child. But to blame it solely on a video game, when almost all media nowadays depicts the same things, or worse, is asinine.

Actually online play is something he doesn't have access to. He mainly plays xbox, and I'm too cheap to pay for a monthly online subscription. But good call on the chatter that goes across the voice chat on there. I know the few experiences I've had online gaming I've been irritated with the total lack of tact, manners, and in a lot of instances education in general that I've come across.
