The world did end and humanity is extinct, but only for this universe.

Our collective consciousness is in a state of nonexistence manifesting itself as observation of an alternate timeline where the world as we know it continues on. Each person synced up with their parallel self, and is now experiencing their life in a manner not unlike dreaming; with no will to act or intervene in ones own actions, only observe what one is doing. We were already all inhabited by our deceased selves from different realities, and are now ourselves within a new carrier.

The reason we don't remember each death is that usually the human consciousness resets itself to the furthest point in time that the butterfly effect can alter events enough to prevent death. We simply attach to a living version of ourselves and observe, with the illusion that we're alive. A premonition of death is when the memory isn't successfully removed before habitation of a new body occurs, and the memory leaches into the carrier.

This agrees with Multiverse Theory, Quantum Suicide, Simulated Reality, Hyperreality, and the concept of a soul. There are more theories/beliefs/etc that this agrees with.
