One has to ponder just what they expect to accomplish. In the real world there is no way to suddenly get rid of all guns on the planet. Therefore crazy bastards that want to get guns and kill people will still get guns and kill people. If crazy bastards are running around with guns killing people, then the most effective way of stopping them is to shoot them. The most efficient way to do this is to have armed responsible citizens.

Of course if the goal is to try and disarm the populace, or failing that invoke a civil war, prior to installing a dictatorship then it makes perfect sense.
