USMC initiates no alcohol Islamic policy

While I don't believe in religious indoctrination into our military, I do believe that if we are to act in the defense of a country or the protection of another that we need to be level headed about it. Alcohol, Marijuana, LSD, etc are recreational drugs that are meant outside the scope of active responsibility. The moment you try to tie someones life to that of a person under the influence that is tasked to protect another is when things get hairy.

Now some of you will scream "What about those blokes who drink and own a gun?". First... the military usually have a weapon on hand while the standard civilian has it put up in a safe environment (at least the responsible individual does).

The middle ground? How about a commanding officer watching over the group. Take their weapons and store them in a safe place they were trained to retrieve their weapons from. If they get close, put them in check.

There needs to be give and take here.

I will probably get negative karma for this opinion but ... meh. There is no black and white... only gray. Gotta find that gray area that floats with the least resistance.

According to the article, the blood alcohol content limit has been set so low that a Marine drinking off-duty could still be over the limit the following morning.

They've set it so low that a man who drinks half a beer or a woman who drinks one third of a beer would be over the limit.

According to the doctor interviewed, even a Marine who gargled with mouthwash within the last 20 minutes would register above the new limit.

Humans will never get it right. No matter the policy, law, or ethic involved :) It's all relative eh?

It's not like they get much out there now! When they are overseas they pretty much work or need to be ready to work 24/7, so it makes sense.
Plus if you guys knew how much sexual assault plays a roll in combat... Well, alcohol just isn't a good mix in such a senario maybe?

A drunk guy is the last person I would want watching my back in combat. No need to drink at work anyway. Also, no where in that article does it say anything about muslims or islam.

If you want to drink beer, then perhaps you should have joined the army.

Its the same no tolerance policy that they have towards non- psychoactive THC metabolites. They will get you for an insanely low level of those...even if you are no at all impaired. Science has nothing to do with it, in the case of THC.

Combating the debilitating threat posed by alcohol abuse and alcohol dependency on both Marines and mission readiness requires a total commitment from all levels of leadership. Leaders must be alert to characteristics of alcohol abuse and with the symptoms of the disease of alcohol dependency. All leaders must not in any way promote or condone alcohol misuse.

I remember my 21st birthday... drank so much Vodka, it was oozing from my pores the next day. I reeked of it. Had to see the gunny that day... stood in the doorway to his office... he let me get away with that, thank God!

I also worked for a county government. They had a ZERO tolerance policy. And, we got piss tested all the time. It was supposed to be "random". However, I got picked all the time. Interesting, since it was well known that I did not drink.

I think they hated firing people. It happened, though.

...BAC testing at the unit level will save 3-5 hour of time and resources by not having to take a suspect Marine to the hospital for testing. Good tool...I don't want a Marine who's impaired in any way to operate lethal weapons or control aircraft with people on board. Should not have to explain all the problems caused by alcohol.
