Deuteronomy 28:64-68

64 Then the Lord will scatter you among all nations, from one end of the earth to the other. There you will worship other gods—gods of wood and stone, which neither you nor your fathers have known. 65 Among those nations you will find no repose, no resting place for the sole of your foot. There the Lord will give you an anxious mind, eyes weary with longing, and a despairing heart. 66 You will live in constant suspense, filled with dread both night and day, never sure of your life. 67 In the morning you will say, “If only it were evening!” and in the evening, “If only it were morning!”—because of the terror that will fill your hearts and the sights that your eyes will see. 68 The Lord will send you back in ships to Egypt on a journey I said you should never make again. There you will offer yourselves for sale to your enemies as male and female slaves, but no one will buy you.

The 'again', is not referring to ships, but to the enslavement in Egypt. The scripture could easily read:

The Lord will send you back, [this time], in ships to Egypt.

This is only logical where in verse 64 we are told the Lord has scattered them 'among all nations', 'from one end of the earth to the other'.

The 'journey [God] said 'you should never make again', refers to

Deuteronomy 17:16

16 The king, moreover, must not acquire great numbers of horses for himself or make the people return to Egypt to get more of them, for the Lord has told you, “You are not to go back that way again.”

I'm not a religious guy, but believe their is truth to it.

Gods of wood? does that mean totem poles?

Thx

The injunction is given, Do not return to Egypt.

The curse is in implication: "Screw up bad enough, and I will drag you away back into Egypt, and into all the other Nations of Mankind you will go, including Egypt".

Gods of wood? Like curved wooden statues of "Mother Mary, the Mother of God"? Much the same as curved wooden totem poles.

But consider, even a stone engraved with the 'ten commandments' can be used as an Idol.
