If aliens (Quetzalcoatl) are associated with this time they probably wanted us to panic for a period of time, for a particular reason. Mind control is really effective for controlling a species from far away. What if the "little green men" or "greys" are genetically engineered to travel space with little or nothing (like insects) fueling ships on readily available Argon. Intelligent enough to perform experiments/implant chips and DNA. And the ancient aliens messed with our culture just enough (the Mayans, Etruscans, Egyptians, Tuatha Dé Danann...) then left the rest of the job to their slave race, the Greys.
