You and your dog didn't happen to watch the movie Gremlins recently, did you? Perhaps the dog remembered the Christmas tree scene.
Anyway, you might want to nip that kind of behavior in the bud. If you took the tree down simply because you don't like the tree idea, then fine. However, if you did it because the dog was barking and growling at it, and they wouldn't stop even after you told them to be quite, then the dog does not recognize your authority in the home. That could grow into a huge problem down the road.
Or maybe there was a Gremlin in your tree.
