A Christmas tree is shaped a little like a huge animal or person, and that may have spooked him. If he is a smart dog he may be trying to figure it out and when he has no reference, it makes him anxious. Maybe next year will be better.

Then getting very upset when presents were placed under it (them) and not because they were laying down in that region prior to the presents being placed there. This is creepy.
