OMG Giant Halo surrounding the moon!!!

Kinda cool info about the lunar halo here and the different beliefs as to what it means as well as the scientific explination of ice particles.

You seem like a 'fairly' rational person. Well worth checking out the site and having a good read. Its pretty undenyable.

A lunar halo is caused by the refraction, reflection, and dispersion of light through ice particles suspended within thin, wispy, high altitude cirrus or cirrostratus clouds.

As light passes through these hexagon-shaped ice crystals, it is bent at a 22 degree angle, creating a halo 22 degrees in radius (or 44 degrees in diameter).

A double halo, sometimes with spokes, may be seen on rare occasions when light reflects off water or ice.

Moonlight reflecting through a very cold atmosphere, ice crystals reflecting the light creating a halo effect around the reflector.

Yes SE MO here we all saw it, it is a very large one tonight. A ring around the moon means precipitaion will fall in that area within 48 hours, it is always correct. But this is one of the biggest rings I ever saw, very cool.

I think the point is to 'look' because it is beautiful. Just because the phenomena has a scientific reason for occurring does not take away from the beauty nor the magic when witnessing said.

The OP is simply attempting to share his or her awe and excitement at beholding something beautiful.




Just because it has a labeled 'box' does not really change anything.

Saw the exact same thing last night here in the San Diego area

i did see the moon here in portland oregon and it was pretty normal except when the clouds went over it had lavender and red hues.

The moon is gone.






Oh wait, I live in Oregon and the clouds cover the sky for most of the winter. Ignore me.

some of you who dont see it, if its clear out, may not be looking out away from the moon far enough. I didnt see it at first, it is a Huge ring and well distanced away from the moon itself.

does look nice but where i am at they sprayed a chemtrail above us making it foggy looking moon...

What part of SW AR? I wish we could see it but they sprayed so much and so heavy today its cloudy.... Kinda weird cause they havent sprayed in a long time but today they were going at it lie back a couple of years when they would make the tic tac toe patterns.... kinda makes you wonder.......

Moon dogs are cool. I've only ever seen faint ones. And, ya, you'd need a good camera on a tripod to photograph one.

Also, the conditions for moon dogs are highly regional; you need ice crystals in the air between you and the moon. 10 miles away, and the conditions might be different.

I'm constantly amazed at how very rarely people look up. It seems as though the only reason people are looking up these days is because of all the DOOM predictions.

I saw a beautiful shades of gray moonbow one time.

The moon halo here in central Tx is about a hands- length around from the center to the edge. Pretty.

It's loving chemtrail crystals.
