Northeast Oklahoma. It was amazing. My family and I stood out on the lawn for half an hour just enjoying the view.

Re: OMG Giant Halo surrounding the moon!!!
No disrespect, but if you keep calling it a "moon ring", then you didnt see what we saw. This is something that can only be described as MASSIVE. It was breath-taking. I really thought something was about to come through it. Like a "door" had opened.

Did it look something like these?

A lunar halo is caused by the refraction, reflection, and dispersion of light through ice particles suspended within thin, wispy, high altitude cirrus or cirrostratus clouds.

As light passes through these hexagon-shaped ice crystals, it is bent at a 22 degree angle, creating a halo 22 degrees in radius (or 44 degrees in diameter).

A double halo, sometimes with spokes, may be seen on rare occasions when light reflects off water or ice.

Moon dogs are cool. I've only ever seen faint ones. And, ya, you'd need a good camera on a tripod to photograph one.

Also, the conditions for moon dogs are highly regional; you need ice crystals in the air between you and the moon. 10 miles away, and the conditions might be different.

It happens periodically and is a natural weather phenomena.

What makes a halo around the sun or moon?

Moonlight reflecting through a very cold atmosphere, ice crystals reflecting the light creating a halo effect around the reflector.
 Quoting: PolarPrecursor

I think the point is to 'look' because it is beautiful. Just because the phenomena has a scientific reason for occurring does not take away from the beauty nor the magic when witnessing said.

The OP is simply attempting to share his or her awe and excitement at beholding something beautiful.

Just because it has a labeled 'box' does not really change anything.

Re: OMG Giant Halo surrounding the moon!!!
I've read that most moon halos are the same size sue to the size of the ice crystals, but it makes sense that the size would change due to elevation in our atmosphere. Regardless, this is by far the largest halo I have EVER seen. St. Louis, MO.
