By: KARK 4 News Updated: December 23, 2012 there's even a crappy picture! Quoting: Anonymous Coward 30107351 You mean like all of the other posts in this thread? its ice crystals in the atmosphere, i've seen this 500 times.
Quoting: OutdoorsMan [ link to en.wikipedia.org (secure)] [ link to www.farmersalmanac.com] A lunar halo is caused by the refraction, reflection, and dispersion of light through ice particles suspended within thin, wispy, high altitude cirrus or cirrostratus clouds. As light passes through these hexagon-shaped ice crystals, it is bent at a 22 degree angle, creating a halo 22 degrees in radius (or 44 degrees in diameter). A double halo, sometimes with spokes, may be seen on rare occasions when light reflects off water or ice. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 30670652 Moon dogs are cool. I've only ever seen faint ones. And, ya, you'd need a good camera on a tripod to photograph one.
Also, the conditions for moon dogs are highly regional; you need ice crystals in the air between you and the moon. 10 miles away, and the conditions might be different.
Quoting: phoomp Its ice crystals
