What are your ideas of its cause? Could my chakras be opening from bottom to top...part of my awakening?

I wish!
..."The soul is dyed the color of its thoughts. Think only on those things that are in line with your principles and can bear the light of day. The content of your character is your choice. Day by day, what you choose, what you think, and what you do is who you become. Your integrity is your destiny ... it is the light that guides your way."

Re: Is anyone else having erratic vibrations in their root chakra area?
If my root get erratic vibrations that last for more than say 30 seconds or so it ends up driving a sensation slowly from the very root of my chakra giving my hanging root a big woodie. I have a family history that ties into the legend of the long dong root. I wonder if this could be the cause of the erratic uncontrollable woodies?
Is this normal? Should I see a doctor?

Have you been more aware of your surroundings because of this 21st of December stuff? that could be a reason for the enhanced root activity.

8 hz, 228hz, 456hz, 912hz and few other frequencies all resonate with the root, get a tone generator if you curious few want to have a taste of that vibration or just meditate on the colour red at the base of your spine for a more practical way of balancing/getting to know your core being.

Well, I don't know what to call it; but for the first time in over a year, over the past few days, I've been having electrical\pulsing sensations all over my body. That, and the strange dreams have returned.

Re: Is anyone else having erratic vibrations in their root chakra area?
I won't go in detail since understanding 2012-2022 window needs some long writing and explanation about evolutionary process of humans.

Lets get to the practice, you may do it few times and if you don't believe or it appears to you that it doesn't work you can forget it.

Sit comfortably on a chair. Scan with your attention (mind) whole body from down to up and see if there is any muscles still not relaxed. You may not be aware of some tense areas but it doesn't matter, relax as best as you can at the moment.
Now, focus on the area between your genitals and anus and relax it completely (this is the area most humans have tension and rarely relaxes it during whole lifetime). When you relax it try to relax even more and more until you feel that it may "drop out of your control". Then close your eyes and breath from down to up, try to feel your breath and more importantly your hollow presence which opens up when space appears more clearly after you take some breath in and out.
Breathing in through that area and letting air go through your mouth.
Doing like this several times you should notice some subtle changes, like feeling hollow inside. This is where energy work or meditation can start happening on experiential level and not just intellectual like most of the humans are now at...

good luck.

Tis merely the distillation of religion.

Look up the eastern ones. It'll open your mind a bit to the possibilities.
