Re: Best water purification tablets?
Our city Board of Public Works just put out an announcement that our water supply does not meet safety standards for TTHM,Total Trihalomethanes, and I'm trying to find something that will filter them out of the water:

"Some people who drink water containing total trihalomethanes in excess of the MCL over many years could experience liver, kidney, or central nervous system problems and increased risk of cancer."

[link to water.epa.gov]

I have liver problems anyway and can't afford to take the chance, but I can't afford to drink only bottled water either. I'm planning on buying a Pur carbon water filter that attaches to the faucet but have just started looking for a solution.

Re: Best water purification tablets?
What are THMs?

THMs are trihalomethanes, chemical compounds that can be formed when water is disinfected with chlorine. THMs occur when chlorine reacts with organic matter in water, and for this reason are more common in surface water supplies throughout Canada.

If I'm worried about THM levels in my water supply, what can I do?

The easiest way to reduce or eliminate THMs in drinking water is to use a water pitcher with a carbon filter, install a tap-mounted carbon filter, or to use bottled water. When using a filter, check to verify that it is certified to remove THMs and follow replacement instructions recommended by the manufacturer. When using bottled water, check to verify that the supplier is a member of the Canadian Bottled Water Association or the International Bottled Water Association. Individuals may also want to keep the length of time spent in showers or baths to a minimum in areas with elevated levels of THMs in drinking water.

Re: Best water purification tablets?
I bought a Pur MineralClear snap-on water filtration system for my kitchen faucet. It's rated to filter TTHM, among several other things, so it serves my purpose.

The only bad thing I see about it, aside from the price of filter replacements, is that it makes a point to state it does not filter fluoride, which it terms "beneficial".

pur doesnt filter much out. what you really need is a big berkey water filter. the main filters last for about 5 - 10 years, and you can even purchase additional filters to remove the fluoride.

i have had a berkey light + fluoride filters for 2 years.

not bottled water. That contains plastics that cause cancer! But you have top watch out because now they want to put lithium in the water supply! And what about all of the prescription drugs in the water. Not to mention floride is a toxic posion! used in rat killer. You have to use several filters to properly purify the water. 1-reverse osmosis 2- house filter 3-faucet filoer and finally a pitcher filter. At least that is my take on it. You can taste the difference in the water!

The Berkey systems work well and the multi-use systems are portable and the filters long lasting.

get a bottle of food grade hydrogen peroxide (35%). 10 drops will make a gallon of water safe to drink. And, it is good for you.

I don't use credit cards so I'm pretty much stuck with what WalMart or other local stores have in stock. It states that it filters an average of 98.85% of TTHM in the water and that's my main concern.

The filter is supposed to be good for 100 gal and that's where they really stick it to you as far as costs are concerned. The unit only cost $28, a box of 3 replacement filters goes for about the same price.

But you have top watch out because now they want to put lithium in the water supply! And what about all of the prescription drugs in the water. It's rated to filter out pharmaceuticals, metals, cysts, asbestos, industrial chemicals, agricultural pollutants, chlorine, and chlorination by-products, which is what TTHM's are. I'm aware of the dangers of fluoride. I don't now how it can filter out everything else and not filter fluoride too. I believe Lithium is a salt so it should filter that.

I plan on getting a pitcher filter to supplement it later on. They were sold out of almost everything they had in stock. I don't know if it was due to Christmas or the bulletin sent out in the mail by the Board of Public Works.

I only use water to make coffee and tea, and when I make tea I boil the water on the stove. That and whatever water it takes to cook something. I hardly ever just drink a glass of water, but it does taste better when it's been filtered.

Re: Best water purification tablets?
You should only use the tablets for when your on the go.

Meaning living out of a backpack.

If your living out of a house you should filter your water.

They also have water filter for backpacks that are pretty light and not very bulky.

I prefer those over tablets anyway.

Because with the tablets your always getting dirty water, even if its safe.

Unfortunately I don't know about tablets but have you considered a SteriPen? From what I've researched they are reliable, and work for many uses.

Thats overkill

The tablets have chemicals in them that kill bacteria and protozoa ect.

The Filters Remove Bacteria and Protozoa

You dont have to kill them and remove them.

Either one is enough.
