Why is it so difficult to find comfortable shoes?
I'm serious.
I've got long wide feet, and when I look for shoes they're either the right length and way too tight or the right width and too long.
I do a lot of walking so I like the soles to be as flat as possible too.
Why the hell don't manufacturers make shoes that are actually practical?!

Re: Why is it so difficult to find comfortable shoes?
Now I raise the question: Are shoes really practical? They cut off breathing to the feet, deform our toes, and make nice homes for bacteria... All for what? Because we've torn up all the grass (made for bare feet to walk on) and replaced it with concrete.

I don't wear anything but basketball shoes, even during winter.

Converse are the most comfortable IMO. The ones with leather uppers, not the canvas type.

Re: Why is it so difficult to find comfortable shoes?
I have the same problem. I use to buy NBs. They have recently changed the dimensions of everyone of their shoes. This occurred about the time they started making most, if not all of their shoes in China. I checked this out on Amazon where I bought my last pair after sending one of their other selections back. This was a frequent complaint in Amazons comment section on over the halve a dozen NB shoes I also checked out. Many tried to contact NB but mentioned that they received no response from them.
Perhaps they are now just conforming their shoes to the dimensions of Chinese feet.

Obviously humans don't live in the most practical places these days. Imagine if we all lived on the equator. To me, outside of arctic exploration, hiking/climbing/sandals/running shoes (for forest floors) are really practical.

I feel your (foot) pain. I have long, narrow feet, and in women's sizes, it's easy to find long, wide width, but not narrow (9-1/2 US). I mostly wear running shoes.

Any time there's discussion of shoes, I try to help by mentioning shoes which literally saved me from a wheelchair, which was imminent, as was surgery

The shoes are MBTs, 'Masai Barefoot Technology'

MBTs are expensive in this country at usually around or above the $300 mark. I was reluctant to spend that amount on 'just a pair of shoes'. Besides, I thought, what could shoes do when I'd been told I needed surgery. But a family member bought a pair for me, having heard about them from someone else

Almost from the first day I wore MBTs, I experienced measurable relief from what had become almost constant pain

Within a month of that first day, I was stopping people at shopping centres (if I saw them walking badly or if it was evident their back was out of alignment) and telling them about MBTs. Some were interested and asked for more info (where did I buy them, for example) whilst others clearly weren't interested

I wore the first pair to bits. Put them on first thing in the morning and didn't take them off until I was about to retire. The results were so outstanding, I would have happily paid a thousand dollars per pair by that point. As it turns out, at around the $300 mark, they work out to be around a dollar a day -- for pain free mobility

MBTs are hard to find in this country, but I discovered I could buy them from the US for around half that price and now I have over a dozen pairs. I will continue to buy them so I will have enough to last me into my old age and death, that's how much I rely upon them, have faith in them and the reason I have no hesitation in recommending them

My daughter has large wide feet like her father. She's tall, so large feet are a given anyway. Until she bought her first MBTs, she used to come home from school and then work each day with bleeding blisters. She used to hobble through the door, tears in her eyes. For some unexplained, backwards reason, Australian shoe manufacturers (should more properly describe them as outsourced shoe manufacturers) don't bother making stylish shoes for women in sizes larger than size 10. Even the expensive large size shoes my daughter was able to buy were badly cut and nothing remotely like a normal foot shape. Orthapedic shoes were ugly and more suited to 60 year olds with severe medical conditions

Now, she has over two dozen pairs of MBTs in all styles, from sneakers to sandals to sexy. It's the largest single expenditure she's made to date. No more deep, bleeding blisters, which in itself is a miracle. The plantar condition she was told was 'incurable' has disappeared since wearing MBTs. And the bunions she was beginning to suffer from have not increased in size and seem to be diminishing. Doctors make a fortune from people suffering these conditions, when its been our experience that all such conditions can be relieved if not cured by wearing of MBTs

I'd like to buy Ryns, which are a similar type shoe, but haven't been able to get them in Australia. Next year, I hope to purchase some from the US for my daughter and I, but we will continue also to wear and recommend MBTs

Others who've taken our advice and purchased MBTs have gone on to buy further pairs and say it's changed their life. It's a sort of underground movement which we entered late in the day (2 years ago) basically because Australia is so far behind other countries in many ways. If I'd known about MBTs when my daughter was a teenager and suffering so much as result of bad footwear, I could have spared her so much pain. Hope this post will help the OP. I have no affiliations with MBTs. In fact, distressingly, one of the shops we bought many pairs from last year has now closed its doors, so it looks as if we're going to become more reliant upon buying them online from the US, where they can be purchased on sale for a fraction of the price charged in Australia

Only one caution re: MBTs ---- make sure they are GENUINE and not the knock-off imitations available from ebay and elsewhere, because we've heard online that the fake MBTs can seriously damage your feet further

Re: Why is it so difficult to find comfortable shoes?
Just adding to my above post:

Like the OP, I've always enjoyed walking, since childhood. I was taller than average and had a hard time finding decent, stylish footwear that was affordable, so as a kid and teenager living near the beach, I wore only sandals or flip flops most of the time

One of the contributors to what was later to become a debilitating condition, imo, was that well into middle age, I continued my favourite beach-side walk in totally flat, cheap imported sandals. I didn't realise at that time that as we age, the fat pads in our feet (and elsewhere) diminish with age. Walking on a hard path surface in thin sandals eventually caused pain and preventing me from walkng for a few days, but I ignored it

Then, quite suddenly, I developed a severe arthritis-type condition, which I again ignored, thinking it was something else. Then as result of lifting heavy items, I developed sciatica. And these problems were exacerbated by a genetic deformity in my lower back. I continued ignoring all the above as long as I could. Time had caught up with me. Finally a specialist told me I had only a few years before I'd be confined to a wheelchair. Before that, surgery was recommended

I didn't want surgery and knew I'd rather be dead than confined to a wheelchair, so I continued to hobble around with the aid of powerful pain-relief medication. It was depressing, because for my whole life until then, I'd loved to walk and had always walked for pleasure. Fast walking, because that's just what I'm wired to do

MBT's gave me my life back. I'm back to walking kilometres each day, no pain at all unless I've been silly enough to overdo it or to carry unsuitably heavy loads. I've a lot to be thankful for, and being introduced to MBTs is an important item on that list

Not sure where you can find the most comfortable shoes, but thanks for posting this thread. Useful topic, I'll be following along - and can relate with the shoe problem. A couple of years ago I stepped on a broken glass and it severed my right achilles entirely. I had surgery to repair it but now have a deformo heel, so one foot is half a size bigger.

My feet also get torn up like tissue paper with new shoes, but Ive found the bandaid anti-blister stick works miracles. Best 6$ ever spent, really prevents blisters in case that is a problem for anyone.

Re: Why is it so difficult to find comfortable shoes?
Not only outsourced, asian-made shoes fail to conform to Western feet

same with bras. Western women, with their many generations of better nutrition and athletic lifestyle than asians, have wider bodies, wider rib cages, etc. I'm on the slim side, like my daughter, but we're finding it more and more difficult to find decently sized bras and bikinis, etc. The stuff we can buy, even quite expensive brands, cater to bird-type chests. On a Western body, they look ridiculous, like two boiled eggs sitting in the middle of the chest

Slacks/pants are another problem. Asian made pants are long in the crotch and short in the leg, i.e. typical asian type bodies. No surprise we see these days Westerners staggering around with the crotch of their pants/slacks down near their knees, while the hem is half way up their shins. I hate bloody outsourced crap and hate greedy Western companies which inflict said crap on Western consumers

But our israeli-enslaves politicians are too busy publicly avowing their alliegance to israel to bother subsidising and encouraging Western companies to set up business in the West, which would also alleviate the chronic unemployment problems experienced by all Western nations

I've worn nothing but hush puppies for the last 40 years. they are so comfortable and well made. They have plenty of styles and aren't too expensive. A pair of hush puppy Waynes is only 100.00 bucks You might find those work for you OP. Clark's desert boots aren't too bad either but not good for long walks.

Re: Why is it so difficult to find comfortable shoes?
The last couple of times I went to buy shoes I noticed that my regular size was too small and had to go up a size.(like the other poster I noticed the same from others in online reviews) It has been difficult to find just plain black walking shoes in stores as most have all the bling and glitter and neon on them (don't have cc so can't order online). Then if you find the right thing they never have your size! Also it is hard to find a shoe that will stay glued together. The last pair of walking shoes I had came apart in 2 months and I did not wear them every day, they used to last 2 years! Hate paying $60 plus bucks for something that is so shoddily made. Got lucky and found a pair of my regular shoes on clearance at TJ Maxx for $25! Too bad they only had one pair. Now praying that they will stay glued a while! Oh, yeah, at first they squeaked, but I tried the old trick of baby powder poured in em and shaken around and poured out and that stopped the squeak!

Wow!
Thanks for all the great replies!
In fact at one point in my life I went barefoot even in winter, developed large callouses on the soles (thanks German guy ;)) but found that I could walk in snow, gravel, and rough terrain, but kept getting spliners of glass in my feet from city pavements.
I'm tall, and fluid in movement so found big clunky shoes or boots threw my balance off.
That's probably a problem with a lot of people-in fact if you think about it, the feet are one of the most crucial parts of the body as all your weight goes on them day after day.
I'll be checking out some of the suggestions for sure.
3D printed shoes sound very intriguing-my feet are slightly different in size and shape as well.
