Thousands of Katrina evacuees EVICTED from hotels, now homeless

Wed Feb 08th 2006

What I'm hearing, which is sort of scary, is they all want to stay in Texas. Everyone is so overwhelmed by the hospitality. And so many of the people in the arena here, you know, were underprivileged anyway, so this is working very well for them. - Barbara Bush

NEW ORLEANS - Hauling everything he owned in a plastic garbage bag, Darryl Travis walked out of the chandeliered lobby of the Crowne Plaza, joining the exodus of Hurricane Katrina refugees evicted from their hotel rooms across the country Tuesday.

More than 4,500 evacuees were expected to check out of their government-paid hotel rooms Tuesday as the
Federal Emergency Management Agency began cutting off money to pay for their stays.

Far more people — a total of more than 20,000 storm victims — were given extensions by FEMA until at least next week and possibly as long as March 1, said FEMA spokesman Butch Kinerney.

FEMA said it gave people every possible opportunity to request an extension. ...

Good, about time they kicked them out. A lot of folks out there, took it in stride and went out and had a job and a place to rent within 3 months after the Hurricane. All you have left now is a bunch of lazy bums trying for more of a goverment handout...

If they still want to sit around and
do nothing on the taxpayer's dime, lets
have FEMA give them all a nice bus ride to one of those spiffy new camps all the
conspiracy buffs have been howling about.

they knew it would end. the difference is that some people realized they would need to begin TAKING CARE OF THEMSELVES, so they made arrangements on their own. others just sat waiting to get kicked out...too bad, so sad...

Yeah! Why do people expect something from the government just because the government takes .50 of every dollar they earn? Half your income is not too much to ask for yoiu to get the pleasure of being treated like a piece of shit that should just crawl off and die, is it? Love it or leave it, I say.

Besides, we have to come up with the $250,000 per illegal Israeli settler to get them off Palestinian land somehow. That doesn't grow on trees. How can you possibly whine about these lazy niggers when we have innocent Israeli squatters to pay off?</sarcasm>

Stop this country, I want to get off.

There are MANY organizations helping Katrina victims find housing and jobs. Jeez, it's been almost six months now:

Six months is a VERY generous length of time for the taxpayers to help the hurricane victims. Any one of them should've been able to find a job within a month. Within six months, any one of them should've been able to afford at least a rented room or studio apartment.

Those who are still living in hotels are lazy leeches. Sorry if the truth hurts, but it's the truth.

I don't necessarily agree with them being kicked out, nor do I necessarily disagree. I think it should be evaluated on a case-by-case basis at this point. Some could easily be back on their own, but I'm sure there are some with special circumstances. I'm sure everyone is going to get all worked up over this, but is the government supposed to "take care of them" forever???? I'm surprised the government has helped them as long as they have! Think about it. They were slow to help in the first place!

Maybe some are still in a state of shock. And some may be use to the welfare state and don't know how to take care of themselves. Whatever it is I hope they get themselves together.

Re: Thousands of Katrina evacuees EVICTED from hotels, now homeless
My company employees 10,000 people, nation wide. We have 2,000 is Texas.

When we opened our operations in Huston we filled 1,000 positions at minimum

Wage. At that time it was 5.75 per hr pulse 8 to 10 hr of over time every week.

If you were any good at all , you would be up to 10.00 per hr in no time .

You would have to be a drug user, felon or just unclean , not to get a job with us .

Thats $300.00 a week or $1200 a month.

A 2 bedroom apartment was running 5 to 6 hundred a month.
Still is

[link to houston.craigslist.org]

Two people making minimum wage make 2000.00 to 2400 a month.

I asked the new employees if the could make it in Huston on this much money.

There answer was

Hell yes

Excuse me for being a killjoy but...
If I were stuck in the shelters and/or hotels after that the first thing I would have done after bathing and putting on donated clothes was go look for a job. I know it's hard to believe but yes. Immediately. All you have to do is state your case. I'm from NO. I have no resume, references other than what I can dictate to you. This is what I can do. I expect to be here a year or more till I get on my feet. Maybe I'll stay here if I like it. You all seem nice so far.

Wha-La! A month later you have rent and clothes and you're on your way.

What's the problem? You can only sponge off a hotel for so long before they get sick of you sucking their tit. Go back to NO you losers and get moving. Or, stop your bitching and start over. Everyone has shit in their life to get over, its whether you do it, or sit there and bitch about it that makes you...or breaks you.

Gee. I was surprised to hear that there are some people still being housed in hotels. I'm so jealous that I didn't get a piece of the welfare cheese - then again, I think I'd rather work.

Well, if they were kicked out of hotels/motels in the greater N.O. area, then that sucks because what ecomomic opportunities are there?

If they are booted out of hotels/motels in other metropolitan areas then, yes, they should've sought out work by now.

Yeah; other peoples problems are always so easy to solve.

Yet so many people manage to hit the skids without the help of a massive huricane devestating their live! Go figure!

I for one, can't work out why after having their lives devastated, anyone should still have be struggling to get it together after six months.

After all, I'm sure the hurricance only targeted people who's lives were previously in perfect order and of course only those who have above average life skills in all and every possible capacity, not to mention only those who were in perfect mental and physical health.

....and jeeze, of course six months is plenty of time to get over any number of famly deaths. There's no excuse at all for any of these people.

But more importantly I KNOW they have no excuse because, I didn't experience the trauma, so naturally I'm in a position to judge.

Yes, I agree. If you want a real surprise, do what I did to get that list, which is google on << jobs hurricane katrina victims>> for ten million hits!! I just cherry-picked from the first page!

I'm amazed that there are people who think the government hasn't done enough for the Katrina victims. There was a time and it wasn't that long ago, when we all expected to take care of ourselves. hmmm...
