Social Security isnot the "government's dime". My entire life (and my deceased husband who never made it to SS)paid out 15% (7 and one half percent visible, and 7 and one half percent invisible) of our wages from every pay check we ever received.- and wehave been robbed to boot, and get only the crumbs left from the king and his thieves' table . Wehavebeen so sadly HAD and bent over, it is beyond pathetic.- and wehave you and you ilk to thank.

It's sad. I don't know why the government doesn't give those retirees who are well off an income break equal to what they'd receive in Social Security every year. They're no longer paying into the SS fund. It would free up a lot of money to pay retirees who hoped they could live off of it. My parents definitely do not need the money but their attitude is they paid into so they want it. If, however, they were given a tax break, they'd take as would a lot of others in their position.

Old people have lived through the most prosperous time in our history. The fact that some don't have a savings and rely solely on social security is really their problem - why should people working 60 hours a week and barely feeding their own kids be responsible for these elderly who couldn't be bothered to save for a rainy day. They need to move in with their kids, nieces, and nephews like in the olden days - or deal with being sick and poor. I know that sounds cruel, but this is the reality of our economic times.

While I agree that this is one very minor consequence (by comparison) of this traitorous administration being allowed to continue essentially unchecked, if memory serves me correctly, AARP was an ardent supporter of Obamacare (and therefore Obama by default). What we are seeing today with the rapid demise of social security is a direct result of this.

Those senior citizens on social security have paid in to the system for their entire adult lives. This is NOT a handout and it is not a free ride. It is THEIR invested money being returned to them.

Food stamps are a handout. Section 8 housing is a handout. Medicaid is a handout. SOCIAL SECURITY IS NOT A HANDOUT. Neither is unemployment insurance payments.

End Social Security! Most young people don't want to be in it and the Government shouldn't FORCE us to be in this ponzi scheme. SS and Medicare are insolvent and will likely collapse with in a couple years anyway.

People recoup, in just a couple of years, the entire amount they put into the system. That's why this is a house of cards. The program was started when there were few elderly and many young people to fund it. Now we have the opposite situation and you are ignorant if you think all the young people in this country should sacrifice for a bunch of old fools who didn't plan adequately.

How my family managed the situation when my grandmother was getting on in years was the grandkids took turns staying with her at her place in town. When she got past the point of living like that, we moved her out to the farm and built on a 1st floor bedroom for her. My parents were luckier - they were able to live in their home until death.

You see, I'm not young - I'm 50. I have no illusions about what is going to happen to the system. My husband and I saw the writing in the cards back when we were 21, freshly out of college, and heard the experts talking about how SS couldn't continue in the present form indefinitely. But have we done squat about it? NOPE! In thirty years we couldn't fix it??? So, we continue to qualify more young people for disability and SS (when all they have wrong is ADHD or a speech impediment), we give cost of living increases, and provide health care which we shouldn't - and now we are broke.

Yes, my husband and I saved and planned for our retirement, assuming ss wasn't going to be there. If other people didn't, that's really not my problem. The Baby Boomers spent their future on cruises (I've never taken one), luxury cars (we keep ours at least 10 years), and designer clothes (not me). Stupid is as stupid does. Like I said, let them move in with the relatives (if the relatives will have them).

When the government let "everyone for themselves" and got out of the way...America had the largest economic boom in human history, largest gain in wealth and prosperity, largest increase in living standards, and the elderly and poor were taken care of through charity.

The reason some don't have savings to depend on is the government spends too much and uses the FED to inflate its debt which leads to higher prices and destroys savings. Excessive taxes also take away from people savings. YOu really need look at the core problems of society as it has nothing to do with the people and everything to do with your political overlords who are corrupt and only care for themselves.

Obama was thinking about compromising and going with the Chained CPI to satisfy the Tea Party. This is not Obama's preferred plan. The Tea Party is forcing these concessions. As far as welfare being a hand out. Welfare is a social safety net we all pay for. We pay it in case we loose our jobs or someone in our family looses their job.
