DFW Texas metroplex - winter weather update
Issued by The National Weather Service
Dallas/Fort Worth, TX

Sun, Dec 23, 2012, 3:01 PM CST

... WINTER WEATHER OUTLOOK FOR DECEMBER 25TH...

A STRONG STORM SYSTEM WILL MOVE ACROSS THE REGION ON CHRISTMAS DAY. A COLD RAIN IS EXPECTED ACROSS MUCH OF THE REGION BEGINNING EARLY CHRISTMAS MORNING. ALONG AND TO THE NORTH OF THE I-20 CORRIDOR... THE RAIN IS EXPECTED TO TRANSITION TO SNOW DURING THE AFTERNOON AND EVENING HOURS. WHILE MOST OF THE SNOW WILL BE LIGHT... PERIODS OF MODERATE SNOW WILL BE POSSIBLE ALONG AND NORTH OF A BOWIE... TO MCKINNEY... TO EMORY LINE. NORTH OF THIS LINE... SNOWFALL ACCUMULATIONS OF 2 TO 4 INCHES ARE POSSIBLE WITH THE HIGHEST SNOWFALL ACCUMULATIONS EXPECTED AROUND THE PARIS AREA. SOUTH AND SOUTHWEST OF THIS LINE... SNOWFALL ACCUMULATIONS UP TO 2 INCHES WILL BE POSSIBLE. THE SNOW WILL TAPER OFF FROM WEST TO EAST DURING THE EVENING HOURS.

IN ADDITION TO THE SNOW... COLD ARCTIC AIR AND VERY STRONG WINDS OF 25 TO 35 MPH WILL MOVE ACROSS THE REGION CHRISTMAS AFTERNOON. THESE STRONG WINDS COULD RESULT IN BLOWING SNOW ACROSS PARTS OF THE REGION THAT MAY RESULT IN DECREASED VISIBILITIES AT TIMES. ALSO... THE FALLING TEMPERATURES AND STRONG WINDS WILL RESULT IN WIND CHILL VALUES FALLING INTO THE TEENS AND 20S BY THE EVENING HOURS... AND EVEN LOWER OVERNIGHT. TEMPERATURES OVERNIGHT WILL ALSO FALL INTO THE TEENS AND 20S WHICH WILL LIKELY RESULT IN THE REFREEZING OF ANY WATER ON ROADWAYS... POWER LINES... AND OTHER ELEVATED SURFACES.

EXPECT IMPACTS AND TRAVEL TO BE DISRUPTED DUE TO THIS SYSTEM. THE STRONG WINDS... ACCUMULATING PRECIPITATION... AND COLD TEMPERATURES COULD BRING DOWN POWER LINES AND TREE BRANCHES... ESPECIALLY NEAR THE RED RIVER WHERE SNOWFALL TOTALS WILL BE HIGHER. TRAVEL NEAR THE RED RIVER MAY ALSO BE DIFFICULT DUE TO REDUCED VISIBILITIES FROM BLOWING SNOW AND SOME SNOW ACCUMULATIONS ON ROADWAYS.

CONFIDENCE IS INCREASING WITH THIS SYSTEM BUT ANY SHIFT IN THE TRACK OF THE SYSTEM COULD RESULT IN SIGNIFICANT CHANGES FOR NORTH AND CENTRAL TEXAS. IF THE TRACK OF THE SYSTEM WERE TO SHIFT FARTHER SOUTH... THE POTENTIAL FOR HIGHER SNOWFALL ACCUMULATIONS ACROSS THE REGION WOULD INCREASE AND THE RAIN/SNOW LINE WOULD ALSO SHIFT FARTHER TO THE SOUTH.

BOTTOM LINE... WINTER PRECIPITATION IS FORECAST FOR THE AREA ROUGHLY ALONG AND NORTH OF THE I-20 CORRIDOR DURING THE AFTERNOON AND EVENING HOURS OF CHRISTMAS DAY AND NIGHT. SNOW ACCUMULATIONS OF 2 TO 4 INCHES ARE POSSIBLE ALONG AND NORTH OF A BOWIE... TO MCKINNEY... TO EMORY LINE. PLEASE CONTINUE TO MONITOR THE LATEST FORECAST UPDATES IN THE COMING DAYS AS THE FORECAST MAY CHANGE.

Doubt it will make it that far south.

I'd just as soon it stays north of metro. We had 11 inches a couple of years ago, and several last year, February I believe it was and both times were highly unusual for this area. Native Texans just aren't accustomed to harsh winter weather.

Plus, the forecast changes often . . . at first, they were saying the DFW metro would get flurries . . . then it was less than an inch . . . now it's possible 2 inches.

I don't think they know until they look out the window.

Here's an audio update as of 12/23 @ 11 pm

Looks now like the heavier winter precip is going to stay more north of DFW metro.

This reminds me of Easter day 2007 here in central Texas.
It was warm the day before and all of the weather men were saying that the bad weather would be confined to the panhandle.
We woke up to 2 feet of snow on the ground !

Not sure where you are in TN, but looks like part of the state may well get some snow:

February 11, 2010 - in metro, average was around 11 inches, although NWS report shows some areas had 14 inches, but I don't know of any place that had that much.

February 11, 2010 was the snowiest day on record in Dallas, Texas. According to the WFAA.com website the Dallas/Fort Worth airport received a record 11.2 inches of snow, which shattered the previous record of 7.8 inches on January 14, 1917 and again on January 15, 1964.

I was just going by what I saw gathering around. Perhaps it was deeper in places due to drifts or something.

That is the storm I was referring to, however. Freaking crazy couple of days.

Re: DFW Texas metroplex - winter weather update
Christmas snow update: Totals trending lower

Snow is still possible on Christmas Day in North Texas, but totals are trending a little lower as of the latest update on Sunday night.

This should not be a surprise, but part of the process of forecasting an evolving storm. This will probably happen another time or two before the storm gets here.

Here's the latest: Temperatures will be cold enough by Christmas afternoon for rain to transition to snow. We'll see periods of moderate snow along the Red River. These counties could receive a total snowfall accumulation of 1 to 2 inches, with some higher snow totals near Lamar and Red River counties.

South of these counties — which includes the Dallas-Fort Worth area — snowfall totals will be light. A dusting or a covering is expected, with some isolated higher amounts, and some areas with no accumulation.

Remember: This system is still evolving, and the track, intensity and available moisture is still not certain.

From WFAA:

TONIGHT: Increasing clouds with showers and thunderstorms developing (50%) overnight. Some storms could be severe...especially SE of the Metroplex. Large hail and damaging winds are the main concern but an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out. Again again...the highest threat area for severe storms will be southeast of the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex. Winds: NE 5-10. Low: 48.

CHRISTMAS DAY: Showers and thunderstorms are likely (80%) during the morning with severe storms possible. Large hail and damaging winds are the main concern but an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out. The most likely area for severe storms continues to be southeast and east of the Metroplex.

By noon the rain will mix with sleet and snow and then change to all snow by mid to late afternoon. Winds: E 10-20 during the morning becoming NW 25-35 during the afternoon with gusts of 40-45mph by late day. High: 48 degrees about noon then falling temps to near 32 degrees by 6pm.

TUESDAY NIGHT: Cloudy skies with snow showers and snow flurries ending during the evening. Partial clearing overnight, windy and very cold. Winds: NW 25-35 with gusts of 40-45 mph. Low: 21.

Issued by The National Weather Service
Dallas/Fort Worth, TX

... WINTER WEATHER OUTLOOK FOR CHRISTMAS DAY AND NIGHT...

A STRONG STORM SYSTEM WILL MOVE ACROSS THE REGION ON CHRISTMAS DAY. COLD RAIN AND SCATTERED THUNDERSTORMS WILL SPREAD ACROSS NORTH AND CENTRAL TEXAS EARLY CHRISTMAS MORNING. A STRONG COLD FRONT WILL BLAST THROUGH NORTH TEXAS AROUND MIDDAY AND SEND TEMPERATURES TUMBLING DURING THE AFTERNOON HOURS. ALONG AND NORTH OF THE I-20 CORRIDOR... THE ATMOSPHERIC PROFILE WILL BECOME COLD ENOUGH FOR RAIN TO TRANSITION TO SNOW DURING THE AFTERNOON. A WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY HAS BEEN ISSUED FOR AREAS ALONG AND NORTH OF A GRAHAM TO DENTON TO SULPHUR SPRINGS LINE. SOUTH OF THE ADVISORY TO THE I-20 CORRIDOR... LIGHTER SNOWFALL AMOUNTS UP TO 1 INCH ARE POSSIBLE.

EVEN THOUGH AREAS OUTSIDE OF THE ADVISORY AREA WILL SEE LIGHTER SNOWFALL AMOUNTS... TRAVEL MAY LIKELY BE IMPACTED CHRISTMAS EVENING AND NIGHT. TEMPERATURES OVERNIGHT WILL FALL INTO THE TEENS AND 20S WHICH WILL CAUSE REFREEZING OF ANY REMAINING MOISTURE ON ROADS... RESULTING IN PATCHES OF BLACK ICE. AREAS OF ICE WILL REMAIN THROUGH WEDNESDAY MORNING.

IN ADDITION TO THE CHANCE OF SNOW... VERY STRONG WINDS OF 25 TO 35 MPH WITH HIGHER GUSTS ARE EXPECTED CHRISTMAS AFTERNOON AND NIGHT. THESE WINDS WILL LIKELY CAUSE BLOWING SNOW WHERE ACCUMULATIONS OCCUR. THE FALLING TEMPERATURES AND STRONG WINDS WILL RESULT IN WIND CHILL VALUES IN THE TEENS AND 20S BY THE EVENING HOURS... AND EVEN LOWER OVERNIGHT.
