Is it true that the peak of civilization was the 1950s/early 1960s?
In those days the economy was strong, the future was bright, and people were happy. You could get a job without even trying, one that actually paid well (none of that unlivable wage crap).

Every time I look at my 1964 Impala it brings to my head a rush of how things used to be. Sprawling suburbs where I used to ride my Schwinn through and receive smiles and waves as I rolled by seeing all the happy families that once resided there, I see the beautiful architecture of diners, the drive in movies where people socialized and laughed after a hard day at school or work, I see neighbors laughing and having a good time and all the love and happiness we once had. Then when the images fade I see the once beautiful suburbs turn back into decaying ghettos you can't drive through without locking your doors and receiving ugly mugs while driving through, I see the once shining chrome lined diners decaying away, the drive in theaters now barren and abandoned while the hoards of teenagers who would have been there have now formed gangs, and all the paranoid and hateful neighbors who would have been kind in a different era. I look at all we've lost and feel a great creeping sadness knowing it'll never return. We now live in a broken country with a broken economy and a grim future.

A small computer/telephone or a toy like the internet won't change these facts. Medicine may have improved but is it really worth living in such a barren (culturally) world? The future nowadays is so dark anyway, there is more of a chance now than ever that there may not be a tomorrow.

Re: Is it true that the peak of civilization was the 1950s/early 1960s?
No ... It was just a period after the Second World War where 50million men had died, and a world needed to be rebuild.

It was an age where the war efforts were used for civilians, commercial airlines, pots, pans and automobiles instead of guns and tanks.

Also it was the age where the foundation was laid for the crap we are in now, all the debt, all the CO2 problems we have dates back to then.

It was an age where people were happy to be alive, make babies and start living again.

Their kids were spoiled brats who from 1968 to 1978 basically turned the world in what we know it today. They took everything for themselves, leaving all the problems for another generation.

It's past 21st December 2012 now ... I say we live in a new age and it's time to leave all that 1900's stuff behind.

If you examine a 1964 Impala you'll notice the hard work put into building it, the love that the workers put into it, and the style and grace it invokes. Cars of that vintage were created with such love and happiness they have actual souls just like people. Those were days were shining beacons of life. The future was bright, people were happy and the economy was strong. People nowadays are unhappy, they realize how worse off we are now than we were in the 1950s/early 1960s and it makes them depressed, even violent.

The Music industry is so commercialized that its working hard to silence people who know the truth. Phil Specter and Michael Jackson were going to tell the people about how the music industry no longer plays what the people want and play what makes money but the music industry silenced them.

Can't speak for the 1960s, but in my memory the 70s to mid-80s were a much happier time: People weren't so sad, depressed or sarcastic, and governments seemed just half as evil.
Nowadays, it seems like we all just wait for the hammer to fall (WW3, resources used up, doom, whatever). That was different in the 70s. There was hope for a better future.

Anyway, here's some 60s music for you all. Love 60s music.

It did seem that culture was more authentic then. Now it's plastic and fabricated and synthesized and engineered in consumer think tank strategy rooms.

I think we could go on endlessly critiquing the phoniness of the American culture we see today.

Re: Is it true that the peak of civilization was the 1950s/early 1960s?
The 50s/60s only seem idyllic in retrospect.

At the time, there were tons of problems, even in the US:

-The Korean War
-The Cold War and Communist witch-hunts
-Moral panic over rock and roll music
-Institutionalized segregation and the long, often bloody battles over civil rights
-Smallpox and other now-historical diseases were still around
-Fears of an extinction-level nuclear war or holocaust

And so on.

I don't know why so many people fall into the trap of thinking the 50s/60s were somehow 'perfect.' Maybe it's because they're remembering their childhood from those time periods, and as kids we're never aware of the larger threats in the world around us, so it creates a false sense of idealism.

Racism was rampant. Child abuse was common. Poverty was actually higher. It goes on and on. It's easy to only remember the good stuff. Check out Penn and Teller's bullshit on "the good old days".

I've spent years filling my home with all the old familiar things we had in the early 60s. Appliances, rotary phones, furniture, televisions,my clothing, shoes right down to my glasses. Most of it was cheap. Nobody wanted old tube radios and stereo consoles when we entered the digital age and they could be had for nothing. The furniture can still be had on the cheap and it is much more durable than the crap made today. Even food labeled from the 50s and 60s can be had if you want to carry it that far. same with toiletry items, colognes, toothpaste etc..my television plays dvd programming from the era complete with commercials and the newscast, games shows, teleplays etc..same with Hi fi set..all music from the era. All my windows are darked out with blackout drapes. Only my computer and few other electronics that I must have betray my efforts to freeze time and I try to conceal them, but to the best of my ability it is 1962 when I shut my front door and 2012 disappears at least for a bit. I don't do this time traveling effort all the time. maybe a few days out of the week or a few hours out of the day. maybe a bit longer when something like what happened in Conn. pops up on the news.
