Let me get this straight:

India has over 1 billion inhabitants.

Half of that population DO HAVE toilets.

That means: 500 million people with toilets in India.

More than the population of the USA.

Those are the facts...

"For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. But if ye bite and devour one another, take heed that ye be not consumed one of another.

This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would. But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.

Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.

Installing and maintaining a sewage/water/refuse system is one of the few legitimate activities for a govt.
Would it be cheaper to install plumbing in existing Indian cities, or just start a new city from scratch?
Cultural differences, my ass. Everybody needs plumbing.

If the USA had 1 billion inhabitants, I doubt that more than 40% of the population would have toilets.

In India, with over 1 billion inhabitants, 50% have toilets.

India wins.

Historical Evolution
An examination of literature brings home the fact that we have only fragmentary information on the subject of the toilet as a private secluded place to help human bodies relieve their wastes.
The archaeological excavations confirm existence of sitting types of toilets in Egypt (2100 BC).
In Rome, public bath-cum-toilets were also well developed.
There were holes in the floor and beneath them there was flowing water.
When the Romans traveled they constructed the toilets for their personal use.
The stools were keyhole type so that these could be used for defecation as well as urination.
Excavations in Sri Lanka and Thailand, too, have brought out a contraption in which urine was separated and allowed to flow while the other portion was used at the same time for defecation.
Historical evidence exists that Greeks relieved themselves out of their houses.
It was also popular in those days to emphasize the medicinal values of human waste.
Urine was supposed to have many therapeutic values.
In the Middle Ages, people were known to throw excreta from their houses out of their windows on to the streets below.
Between the period 500 to 1500 AD, it was considered a "dark age" from the point of view of human hygiene.
It was an era of cesspools and human excreta all around.
Rich man's housing and forts in many places around the world had protrusions in which defecation was done and the excrements fell into the open ground or a river below.
In Europe it was an era of chamber pots, cesspools, and close stools.
French poet Claude le Petit described Paris as "Ridiculous Paris" and in the following words:
"My shoes my stockings, my overcoat
My collar, my glove, my hat
Have all been soiled by the same substance
I would mistake myself rubbish."
Public baths were quite famous in early Rome (about 200 BC).

It all comes down to superior European culture and knowledge. It's something that the ball-less Liberal media has tried to suppress and will call you a racist if you bring it up, but it's the truth.

This is the very reason that civilizations like Greece, Rome and the United States have all flourished, while backward ignorant society's like India (worshiping cows as gods) and Muslims still live and think in 7th century mentalities.

And yet million upon millions of Americans are rejecting the Saviour of their forefathers - the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob - for "eastern spirituality" stemming from India. Somehow they've been led to believe that it's the 'height of enlightenment' yet don't bother to go and visit these places to see that Satan has these people living in caste systems of slavery through the ridiculous notion of karma, bisexual to the hilt and worshipping sensuality and pleasure. We are fast rejecting the true God of Heaven and Earth who blesses His people beyond measure for this man-made desire to think of ourselves as "gods".

And we don't WONDER why yoga is trying to be forced on our kids at school as the solution to stress whilst prayer to the True God is ripped from our laws, schools, churches and homes?

They bathe next to floating dead bodies in the river, take a poo in front of everyone yet those eastern spirituality leaders worshipped in our lands today hold the keys to "enlightenment"??????

Wake up people.

As you can see was just going to say that.

The evidence is irrefutable, so why would anyone deny it?

My question is... and I know many countries need to get their house in order before preaching, but just on the banks of the Ganges millions of people live in that filth. Why not just join together and clean this so called holy place up?

Krishna must be doing flips at the state of that crap all over the place.

There is no education on pollution??? I do not believe that for one second. This is a simple sorry state of affairs where money goes to temples and people ignore the fact that someone down stream is dying from cholera, typhoid and a multitude of infestations due to the dead being allowed to rot disrespectfully in the rot of millions before them.

Plain lazy and ignorant, but you cannot just blame the people or culture, this is also ignored largely by the Indian government - whom in turn should have aid vastly reduced until the environmental problem are addressed.

Now is that too radical to suggest without being called out as a racist which I am not?

It seems without fail, the issue with people here is often the lack of a secondary education, coupled the lack of any post high school reading. Perhaps even pre- high school reading, depending on locale, and cultural background. If anyone, who was so quick to comment regarding the 'development' of civilizations, had simply understood these differences from a historical, or anthropological background; with this I'm speaking of a basic post high course that explains these basic cultural differences, they wouldn't be using phrases such as "backwards society"..

The reason civilizations developed as such, is more a difference in tradition, rather than a technological, or ideological one. Civilizationshadn't developed according to a universal principle, or a rudimentary rule of thumb. This is why you don't fine working plumbing in some older societies, and you will find it in others as far back as warfarehad developed amungst other peoples. To understand something likecultural differencewould be to understand the reason for all cultural developments, and that would eliminatethesimpleand crude question you pose here. Meanwhile, those who are keyboard ready with their childlike reasoning, and remedial understanding of cultural anthropology, will continue to embarrass themselves time and again.

Please pick up a book, or continue your education, and this will eliminate a lot of your cultural biases, and prejudices. The very simple reason behind posing this ridiculous question is a lack of understanding on such a basic level. I'm not trying to offend anyone, or sound snooty or stuck up, and I am sorry if it came off that way. I just see a very real problem in not understanding why some societies developed certain ways of living at different points, or not at all, and why cultures are different across the world. I truly believe not understanding these differences leads to a real biasto other peoples, other cultures, and creates conflict. Weshould berespecting others for their differences, and not judging them harshly becausethey don't all 'live likeAmericans'. The world is a beautiful and diverse place.

I don't think their culture either cares or knows about sanitation... I have seen some Indian people working at restaurants and they would use dirty food that fell the floor without a second thought, especially if they recently immigrated from India.

To us Westerners that is repulsive but to them it's nothing.

Yet again you're comparing and contrasting against a biased cultural standpoint. You cannot judge a culture by its inverse lack of technological advancement. To do so, would be to withdraw all differences between countries like India, and the all godly (soon to fall) American empire. You draw opinions based on some ideological sense of accomplishment through materialism. To put it bluntly: you do not understand culture, or more rationally; you are uncultured. I'm not saying this as an insult. I do not feel it your fault that you are so numb to other cultures, it's part of the bubble that America provides. In this bubble however, it's easy to forget that your opinions may be offensive, ignorant, or just plain grossly wrong. "Terrible", is a subjective term that couldn't encompass a culture in any fashion, whether it be the oldest of civilizations or newest such as America. And to hold all Americans accountable for these awfully imature world views, is wrong of the rest of you. We are a young peoples, give us time to root out the elements that do not fit, such as ra general lack of formal education, and a steadfast cultural ignorance. I forgive you all for your immensely uneducated opinions ..

Ahem.

[link to www.bbc.co.uk]

The scheme was launched on Monday in 34 villages in Jhunjhunu district.

Four to five people will "shout, beat drums or blow a whistle" if they see anyone urinating or defecating in the open, an official told the BBC.

Repeat offenders may even be asked to pay a fine, he said.

Nearly half of India's 1.2 billion people have no toilet at home and they defecate in the open.

and they had central heating..

they actually had advanced house heating system that heated the floor..and obviously the house ..etc..

they stored their wine wrong though imo...messed up the brain chemistry a bit later on..

Yeah, didn't they store their wine in lead or something similar?

But hey, easy mistake to make, at least they didn't drink the water they shit in, like those punjabs

**One Of The Things That Caused The Downfall ... Of The "Roman Empire" ... Was That They Drank Their Beverages In Heavy Lead Steins/Drinking Containers !!

**The Lead Would "Leach Out" Into The Beverages ... Due To The Interaction With "Natural Chemicals" In The Drink (Acids/Alkalines) & Be Absorbed Into The Body !! ... The Persons Drinking Therefore Would Have "Lead Poisoning" ... Which Effects The Brain/Mind ... Causing Mental Retardation ... Weaking Of The Muscles/Joins ... Organ Failures !!

**As To Those Of India ... You Need To Understand ... That These People Are The Descendants Of Surviors ... Of The Ancient Wars Of Long Ago !!

**There Were Cities & Technology Then ... Which Greatly Surpassed Those Of "Romans" Of Their Time !! ... With Flying Machines (Vimanas) ... With Advanced Waste Disposal ... Body & Otherwise ... With Knowledge Beyond Ones Imaginations !! ... Alas ... All This Was Destroyed In The Wars !! ... Atomics Of Various Design ... Of Various Elements & "Half Life" (Some In The Billions Of Years ... Which Is An Estimate !!) ... These Were Used Against Ones Neighbors !!

**There Are Reports That Entire Armies ... Of Their War Elephants ... These Were Put Afire ... Put Aflame ... Of People Diving Into Waters ... To Excape The Extreme Heat & Radiation ... To Futility !! ... People & Creatures Burnt/Ashed Alive !! ... Water Supplies Dried Up ... Food Sources Destroyed ... Land Made Highly Radioactive !!

**Of Survivors ... Only Those Who Were Able To Get Away ... Before The Bombings ... Before The Light, Blast & Heat Was Laid Upon The Lands !!

**It Is These Survivors ... Who Excaped To Other Lands ... Who Came Back To Their Native Lands ... Those Who Developed A Somewhat Of An Immuniity To The Radiations & Other Destructive Weapons Used ... It Is Their Descendants ... That Acquired An Immunity ... That You See Today ... In Poverty Like Conditions !! ... Their Once Highly Advanced Culture Destroyed ... By Ones Who Sought Ultimate Autority ... Ultimate Control/Power ... Of Which The Lessons Learned ... If the USA had 1 billion inhabitants, I doubt that more than 40% of the population would have toilets.

In India, with over 1 billion inhabitants, 50% have toilets.

India wins.

No. This is a stupid comparison. How would America get that extra 700 billion people? Would they fall out of the sky? Or are you proposing a 1-billion-population USA that had developed organically? In that case, check with us in 150 years and then talk about differences in toilet usage.
