I recommend you read this if you don't think this has hurt his public image remember there is always a fine line between what constitutes slander and or libel.

Slander -

3. Law. defamation by oral utterance rather than by writing, pictures, etc.

The first amendment is important... but you can't use a right guaranteed to you by the constitution to infringe upon the rights that others are guaranteed by it. I would imagine that having nasty lies spread about you might hinder your rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness... mostly the last one.
