Apple Macbook Pro 13 inch vs Dell XPS 14?
Apple with 13 inch display and 1TB HD with 8GB RAM.

Dell with 15 inch display and 1TB HD with 8GB RAM.

Battery life on the Apple around 7-8 hours.

On the Dell maybe 2 hours.

Both have backlit keyboards.

Heard SSD drives only last up to 5 years, and an extra $1000 for half the space.

With the Dell all my programs are easy to install and I know how to use.

But the Apple would be fun to learn.

Anyone got any suggestions why I should go with the Apple?

Re: Apple Macbook Pro 13 inch vs Dell XPS 14?
if you buy a mac (any mac), you can run windows in a virtual machine -- the virtual machine software is pretty cheap

if you buy a pc, you can't run the macos in a virtual machine (unless you create a hackintosh -- which is illegal, and doesn't run very well if you can get it to work)

to sum it up, macs can run windows, but not visa-versa, and to be fair even if you buy a mac, a virtual windows machine may work for everything -- i.e., research whether a windows virtual machine running on a mac can run ____insert your application here______ before committing to go this route

Depends on what you'll be using the computer for. There was a time when dell made good machines. Not any more. I would never recommend a dell to anyone.

My current Dell is over 2 years old and going well.

But I know in the next 8 months I will need something new as I will be doing a lot more video editing.

So planning for that.

If you decide not to go with Apple, build your own PC if you have the time.

Re: Apple Macbook Pro 13 inch vs Dell XPS 14?
Okay, IT tech here, here's the straight shit-

For all intensive purposes, the hardware is equal.

However, the Dell is cheaper, you can order parts and upgrade it yourself, and I don't need to tell you that PC has a much larger body of available software.

The Apple laptop will have the same hardware at a much higher mark-up. Less bang for your buck.

Check, and post, BOTH video cards. That is important. And whether the RAM is shared or dedicated in the GPUs. I bet the Dell's is more powerful.

It is NOT illegal to run a "hackintosh", or Mac OS on a PC platform. Apple even releases distributions made to run on universal hardware.

I'd go with the PC. Mac is losing the market again when it comes to personal computing, and when it boils down to it, there's still nothing the Mac can do that the Dell can't, and several things the Mac won't do that the Dell can. You can also install any version of Windows you please. And if you plan to develop in 3D, you'll want the platform that's driven by 3D technology, right? As long as console games (and most games in general) are made on PCs, they will ALWAYS have the leading edge when it comes to development, because animators and gamers push the whole industry's advancement.

If you are used to Windows just get a Dell. I think the novelty of switching to OS X will be short lived.

People who grew up with Windows are more comfortable with Windows. People who grew up with Mac's are more comfortable with Apple.
