within a year russia will be under the northpole
the current north and southpole will melt
russia will claim, since it lost most, it has biggest claim to the new (mineral rich)land

the rest of the world will disagree

they will have nothing left to lose

imo i hope this dont happen but the temps in russia are very north pole like, amd it seems ice is melting where it "used" to be

In -35c cars that not in garages are freez- wheels defeated(to 0 psi ), and fou can't start engine- battarey aint no working enough. If car is diesel - paraffin(wax in diesel fuel) precipitate and crystalise- is MUCH bigger problem. But there is too many guys making cash on car defreazing. They use 50-100kW gas\diesel fuel heat guns. Defreaze costs 30-50$ and it about 20-30 mins.
80% of peoples who using cars in winter have a "engine covering" - carbon fabric blanket that puts on engine to save heat. On the north another problem - car freezes when you drive. It means cooling liquid freezes in radiator while engine is running. in that sutuations cooling liquid changes to 98% clean spirit.. covering all engine.. put inside doors and roofs extra thermal insulation.. exhaust pipes goes thru the gas tank to heat fuel..
I want to tell that -40 sometimes -45 - is absolutely normal.
When it -30 and low, im going my job on foot- i think it's great to breathe clean air))

Forecast in Iceland shows that we might break the historical RECORD for lowest temperature ever recorded, next 27th December, near Myvatn

[link to www.mbl.is]

The computer models forecast a low temperature between -34ºC to -45ºC, still uncertain and difficult to predict exactly. But the absolute Icelandic record stands at -38ºC from 1918.
temperature in Reykjavik for 1938 is still falling? Recently it dropped by almost 1.8°C

Amazing, Alberta Canada here. It has been -47C about once or twice every year since I can remember. With wind chill that can sometimes reach -67C. Some years this lasts for a week or three. exposed skin freezes in less that one minute.

I would have thought Iceland would be worse.

Um, no. Canada here. -47C with no wind chill at least once every winter, lasts sometimes 3 weeks. Car starts, everyone goes to work, life goes on. Pretty typical here but yes when doing a cold start in -47C if you do not have an engine bock heater only older cars will start and only if they are well tuned.

Tires do tend to get flat on the bottom so for the first few minutes it feels like driving on square tires and your seat is hard as a rock. That was my experience young and poor parking outside with no block heater.

Most people garage their cars and/or use engine block heaters so the coolant is lukewarm on start. Only thing is, keep an emergency bag in your car and be prepared to go it alone for a while if you hit a drift and go off the highway in winter. Stay in your car and keep your head.

Every year a few people try to walk what seems a short distance for help and they don't make it.

I stopped sipping on my drink for a second and the whole straw froze.

And out of all the exposed skin I was rocking only my ear tips got minor frost bite :/

It is my personal belief that the pole is shifting. Get on google earth or look at a globe... if Europe and Asia are getting colder, then North America should get warmer.... and it is. Other than a few days of cold, it has been extremely hot (not warm, but hot) here in the USA.

I might be wrong, but it is my theory.

Exactly, a town in north-eastern Siberia holds the record for the lowest temperature ever recorder in the northern hemisphere: -71.2°C / -96.2°F.
However, temperatures of around -65°C / -85°F are not uncommon there.
Plus, there are quite many towns in Siberia where temperatures regularly reach around -60°C / -76°F.

The locals there say, that spoken word freeze in the air before they reach another's ear. cool2
