| Anonymous Coward User ID: 7570540 12/24/2012 02:17 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | One time last year, my son, a college student running errands for the company he worked for part-time, stopped to fill up the company truck. A bum came over and asked for money and he gave him some. The old man went inside and came running out quickly, telling my son not to go in because the place was being robbed (Atlanta). My son had just finished filling up and was going to go in and get a soda. So, what goes around comes around, huh? |

He reminded me of a rabid GLPer. *snip* I hope you weren't referring to me there. Anyway, if that guy thinks the economy is so horrible that you shouldn't give away 2 dollars of your own money as you see fit, then he should probably explain why he is wasting money at a laundry mat instead of hand-washing it in his sink/tub and hanging it up to dry. |
| Anonymous Coward User ID: 30742199 12/24/2012 02:20 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I was minding my own business putting clothes in a dryer, when a young black girl approached me and asked if she could have a dollar for the bus. Normally, I don't make a habit out of giving money to strangers because I am asked too often and would be broke if I gave to everyone that asked. But it is Christmas Eve and she really looked like she needed it. So I gave her two dollars worth of quarters and wished her good luck. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 27747263 Then this hispanic older man asked me if I knew "how bad the economy was?" I replied that yes, I was well aware. And then he proceeded to chew me out for giving the girl money. He said I was part of the problem and he was talking really loudly so everyone could hear. I just rolled my eyes and laughed and turned around to finished putting quarters in the machine. The girl who asked for the money somehow heard this and started saying something to the man, then he began to yell at her telling her that she was probably on welfare and had babies at home she couldn't take care of. Then they yelled some other stuff I couldn't make out to each other. Before I left, I made sure to wish the man a Merry Christmas. Me and the girl both made our way out the front door and she looked extremely upset. I told her not to worry about it and some people were just scrooges. She looked like she was going to cry. I felt sorry for her. Maybe I am part of the problem by giving change when I feel compelled to. But I certainly would hate to live in a world where no one helped anyone else ever. I think we need to help when we feel compelled. And on this Christmas Eve I felt compelled. Fuck Mr. Scrooge. You did well its people like that who create the problems , who wants to put a dog leash on everry human and make them slaves .... no retirement , no welfare , no medical care , no religion , no mercy no hope .... screw the bastard .... |

It's exactly like loaning money to people. Don't loan it, just give what you can spare. If they can't pay you back, well, consider it in your mind as a gift. Loans are bad news. Feelings get hurt, and friendships and family relationships get ruined. Anyways, good on you, op, for doing what your heart compelled you to do. Once, an old man, really skinny and ollllddd, used to show up at the swings. His English wasn't great, but I understood a tiny bit. He would motion his fingers to his mouth. He was hungry! I never knew where he lived. He'd just show up at the swing park in front of our house, and sit and look at the ground. Finally I would start bringing out a sandwich every day to him. He would smile, cry, etc....Turns out, the assholes that were supposed to be caring for him, were cashing his SS checks, and letting him starve. They went to jail, and he went to a home. Poor thing. Everything happens for a reason. Who knows what butterfly wing's flutter begins one place and ends in another. I liked your story very much. |

I also live in an area where pan-handlers abound and some of them get really unpleasant when you don't give, so I always think about it before answering. As for being part of the problem, no. You aren't. The whole problem is the creation of the welfare state by a bunch of cronies who wanted a built-in constituency. It should have occurred to anybody with common sense that before long, forced re-distribution of wealth would be the only way to sustain it. It will soon collapse under its own weight, however. The only problem is it will take those who choose to make their own way with it. |

Sure they can spend it on whatever, but it's a small amount and it's going to them. When the government confiscates our money, it goes to who knows what. Tons of it goes to paying for their campaigns or paying off people who do them favors (read: political constituents). Also, when you give directly to someone, you eliminate the enormous middle-man bureaucracy that reaches in and takes part of the pie before the money gets to its intended recipient. "Money for schools" is a perfect example of this. So I commend anyone who gives to those less fortunate directly or to someone who's in a bind and could use the cash at the moment. You did a good thing. :) Apollo astronauts couldn't have passed through Van Allen's Belt. Van Allen wore suspenders. |
