The gunman, William Spengler, had served more than 17 years in prison for beating his 92-year-old grandmother to death in 1980 at the house next to where Monday's attack happened in upstate New York, Webster Police Chief Gerald Pickering said.

Spengler, 62, was paroled in 1998 and had led a quiet life since, authorities said.

Seems weird that you would go "quiet" for 14 years, and then do something like this.

And at 62 years of age.

So he goes to jail at the age of 31, gets out at 48, and does nothing wrong until he turns 62?!

Weird.
