Mr. HypGnostic (OP) User ID: 30301043 United States 12/24/2012 06:26 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | What is your take on evil and it's perceived preponderance in modern life, especially in its banal/existential form? Quoting: NotD Sorry, but you asked for it. Haha damn, a little stumped on the question but i will answer it to the best of my knowledge. I do not necessarily believe in good or evil for everything is permitted. We live in a dualistic reality therefore noone but the creator has the right to label things as good or evil. I personally believe that before an incarnation we decide what kind of life we want to live based on our need for certain experiences. Sure we could say that murder is evil but in the right context we can also say that murder is good. Good and evil are mere perceptions we have about the surrounding world to help us cope with this reality and live a certain type of life. Someone living on the streets of compton will have a much different view of good and evil than someone from a gated community. I think aleister crowley put it best when he said "do as though wilt", by saying this he meant that good and evil are mere perceptions and that everything has already been justified in the higher realms of existence. Dont know if this is what you were looking for but that is my take haha In Lak`ech. |

Dont know if this is what you were looking for but that is my take haha Great answer. I also think the technology involved with modern life alters the traditional ways of looking at good and evil. The "Do as though wilt" saying to me is a derivation of Dostoevsky's statement "Without God, everything is permitted" In other words, without a moral authority humans will naturally regress to a state of nature whereby every overt action, and every conceivable action, is justified by virtue of the fact that it 'is', and everything in existence must be evaluated by natural processes to prove it's existence (like fighting for survival). This is a pragmatic concept bordering on the existential but came about in a time when technology was not nearly as advanced as it is today. Technology and science gives man authority over nature, a god-like faculty, which in theory puts man in the position of gods, being beyond good and evil. As far as technology's relation to all human actions being sanctioned by nature, there are obvious problems with this like the disparity of wealth between rich and poor, efficient extermination of fellow human beings (like the Holocaust and weapons of mass destruction), and the postmodern reality created by the internet, advertisements, and digitized social interactions - all which are more or less antithetical to nature, paradoxically. It all brings new complexity to the age old questions of what is good and what is evil, what is the ultimate purpose of humanity, and what, if any, meaning exists in today's world and how does one find it. To what extent are/can we be happy and what constitutes individual's responsibility to other people and society as a whole. That's kinda a brief and random overview of the topic. :) Last Edited by NotD on 12/24/2012 06:48 PM |

All this being said i do still tend to believe that certain acts here on earth have karmic repercussion. In Lak`ech. |
