Paulus Hook is a community on the Hudson River waterfront in Jersey City, New Jersey, located one mile across the river from Manhattan. The name Hook comes from the Dutch word "hoeck" which translates into "point of land." This "point of land" has been described as an elevated area, the location of which is today bounded by Montgomery, Hudson, Essex and Warren Streets. The neighborhood's main streets are the east- and west-running Essex and Morris Streets. The waterfront of Paulus Hook is along the basin of the Morris Canal in a park with a segment of Liberty State Park. The Hudson-Bergen Light Rail has a Paulus Hook stop at Essex Street and the Liberty Water Taxi at Warren Street. The introduction of the light rail and development of office buildings on the Hudson Waterfront have brought more businesses to Morris Street including a number of restaurants with outdoor seating and small neighborhood shops.

After the war ended on November 22, 1783, the day after Evacuation Day, when they left New York City, the British evacuated Paulus Hook and sailed home.

I saw "Lt. Mike Chiapperini" today talking about an upstate fear job in the AM. The Hook thing interests me because of the "sine" wave pattern if you look at Paulus Hook to Pier 11, Then the Name Paula (did not have sex with "that" women" name fame) Hook in the "sandy hook" mass-a-scare. The Sandy Hook Nike station is one of a very few stations that are still intact.

North of Fort Hancock on the western part of the "hook" is an active station of the United States Coast Guard. This is one of the original Life Saving Stations built in 1848 at a site "on bay side, one-half mile south of point of Hook." The site was changed several times through the years due to a change in land or at the request of the War Department, which owned the land.[9] This area is administered by the Department of Homeland Security and is off-limits to the general public.

Due to the relatively short range of the original Nike missile, the Nike "Ajax", many bases were located relatively close to the center of the areas they protected. Frequently, they were located within heavily populated areas.

The Nike Hercules Missile

Work on a successor to the first Nike missile, the Nike Ajax, was initiated well before the first Ajax missiles were deployed at tactical sites across the nation. Two major considerations drove the development of the this second-generation Nike missile. The first was a requirement to produce a missile with improved speed, range and altitude capabilities to defend against a new generation of faster and smaller aerial targets, in particular, supersonic aircraft and cruise missiles. The second requirement was the desire to arm this new missile with a powerful atomic warhead to ensure destruction of the target aircraft and the destruction of disabling of any nuclear weapons it carried.

Unlike the Ajax, the Hercules missile was designed from the outset to carry a nuclear warhead. Designated "W-31" the Hercules nuclear warhead was available in three different yields: low yield (3-Kilotons); medium yield (20-Kilotons) and high yield (30-Kilotons.). A Kiloton (Kt.) represents the explosive force of 1,000 tons of TNT. For purposes of comparison, the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima, Japan, near the end of the Second World War had a yield of approximately 15 Kilotons.


Armed with its nuclear warhead a single Nike Hercules missile was capable of destroying a closely spaced formation of several attacking aircraft. However, defending against mass formations of aircraft was not the only reason for deploying atomic warheads on the Hercules missiles. Instead, the atomic capability provided an enhanced capacity for destroying or disabling the nuclear weapons carried aboard an aircraft, helping to ensure that there would be no nuclear detonation of these devices.


Deployment of the first nuclear-armed Nike Hercules missiles was made on an emergency basis within the continental United States. Because sufficient quantities of the W-31 warhead were not available in early 1958, some of these missiles were initially equipped with an already available, although somewhat heavier, nuclear warhead designated "W-7".
