Is there some odd reason you can't build a fort for them out of your own time, sweat, and home depot materials? Just sayin. That is what I'm working on. It is expensive. I only have a few boards so some time this year. Some time this year? You take the few boards and put them under the tree! Tell them you're gonna build a nice fort some time this year, but TODAY you're gonna use them to build an inside pretend fort. Get some blankets, play inside the forts with them. Come on! |

(again this year) I doubt they have asked for this gift. If they have, you should've been honest and told them you can't afford it. I think you're after a hand-out. Food, rent and bills in my opinion come first before presents. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 30766571 Thats a whole lot different than OPs post. OP is saying no gifts for the kids because there is no play set/fort AGAIN this year. Many kids donr have an expensive play set but it sure doent mean they got no gifts. To many places that give free toys and clothing and bedding sets for any kid to not get something. Maybe OP needs to figure out there are less expensive gifts to give kids. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 30818799 Australia 12/25/2012 01:39 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Don't know if the OP drinks or smokes But they ARE online. And internet connections aren't free as far as I'm aware Christmas doesn't happen on random dates. It's the same time each year, allowing the most broke parents to plan in advance and save a few dollars per week A parent who's concerned enough about having no presents on Christmas Eve has had months to figure it out and cancel their internet connection in order to put aside money for the kids' Christmas I read a story written by a very old woman, the daughter of a rural pioneer. After chopping wood, carting buckets of water to the vegetable garden, washing clothes by hand, making all the family's food from scratch, raising chickens, milking the cow, clearing the land, patching a wattle and daub shack and birthing and nursing children all day every day, the old lady said her mother had made all their Christmas presents by hand from mattress ticking -- using just needle and thread by candle-light while sagging with exhaustion Do they still make parents like that any more? Will the OPs children remember their parent/s making such sacrifices or will they remember neglectful parents who hunched over a computer screen and phone all day in order to escape their reality ? Christmas doesn't have to mean store-bought presents. It could mean a humble picnic at a park or free playground with parents who're actually interested in interacting with their children and parents who genuinely interact with their children are able to explain to kids the facts of life, the situation with family finances and make it ok for those kids Lots of families give up their own Christmas day in order to volunteer their time and energy to the less fortunate, thus teaching kids to give rather than 'get', and in the process those children forget about 'presents' and take pride and joy in sharing their day with those who really are less fortunate than most of us |

Dollar Stores are everywhere. Coloring books, construction paper, crayons, markers..even reading books for almost nothing. I know a lot of people that are doing that this year. And the LORD spake, saying, "First shalt thou take out the Holy Pin, then shalt thou count to three, no more, no less. Three shall be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the third number, be reached, then lobbest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch towards thy foe, who being naughty in My sight, shall snuff it. I am an evil giraffe, and I shall eat more leaves from this tree than perhaps I should, so that other giraffes may die. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 30819407 United States 12/25/2012 02:06 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Op, your kids will remember. I remember one year I was about 10 and I didn't get gifts. Mom was sick, had to travel for treatment, so I had to stay at my Dad's house. It was delivery pizza for Christmas dinner. Not very festive, hardly any remnants of Christmas except for a small tree with a few ornaments I put together.. No gifts that year. I didn't vocalize how upset I was, but it was a real let down. I just wanted something, anything, to act like a token for the holiday from my dad; a little token of thoughtfulness and love. The next day Dad took me to the store and bought me some boots. I pretended that was my Christmas present. Give your kids SOMETHING for Christmas. Even if its cheap, its much better than nothing. Show them you thought of them. |

Anyone else? (I'm a lurker.) I don't have gifts for my kids. I probably could have taken some money and bought a few things, but I'm finally irritated enough that Christmas is so commercialized that I decided not to buy anything. I don't want to buy shit for my kids just because society dictates that I must do so. I'd rather buy them things when they need it and when I can afford it. So this year, I cheerfully told them I'm not buying Christmas gifts but I explained that we would have fun making food and playing games. My kids are a little older than yours, but I've had to explain the facts of life to various kids at younger ages from time to time, and I learned that kids are smarter than we think and more resilient than we realize. Also, it's all about your attitude towards the "problem." One of my older daughters said to me once, "You made poor seem like so much fun." (We were always out of money and food when I was going to school but stupidly procreating at the same time.) So make this "fun" for them. |
