I just watched Secrets of the Vatican. Here's the thing..those artifacts are cultural/historical works of art. You don't just melt down priceless cultural artifacts. That stuff does not represent liquidity. I'm not saying the Vatican doesn't have stores of wealth.. but you don't go on ebay and sell off historical treasures.

Well.. during the Renaissance there was a lot of corruption. The papal seat was a coveted position for the sons of wealth aristocracy. The church collected taxes, sacked Jerusalem and other areas, and built up enormous wealth. Surprisingly, most of it was plundered at the turn of the century, and they lost most of it at that time. It's been built back up since. There are discussions of Nazi gold there too.

If you google the words vatican gold artifacts you can do your own research. The intriguing question is whether there is a hoard of gold coinage or bars.

That's very unsettling. I can see them having things from the Renaissance but to know they keep accumulating it and may have hidden stores of it - begs the question "WHY?" Are they saving for a rainy day?
