I hate to say this since you're probably upset from the cat being dead, and it is DESPICABLE that someone would do this, but pet owners should keep their pets inside. It's not nice to have to clean pet hair and deal with scratches from cats being all over cars. Keep them inside. I don't know what some neighbors with cats just leave them outside, especially when it's cold.

I NEVER let them out, but we had a sunroom at the back of the house all in glass, and when we'd open that door to the outside the cats would want to go out and explore. One day one of the cats escaped, and we never saw him again. About a year later, our other cat escaped through that same door and we never found him either. I spent a lot of time walking around the neighborhood asking people if they saw anything but of course no one did. It never even crossed my mind that someone would shoot them but I guess that's a good possibility.
