It seems a simple enough question - yet it has baffled the best brains for at least 2,300 years. Aristotle agonized over it fruitlessly in the fourth century BC Roger Bacon in the 13th century used it to advocate the scientific method in his book Opus Majus Another Bacon, Francis, wrote in his 1620 Novum Organum, that "slightly tepid water freezes more easily than that which is utterly cold" but could not explain why Descartes was defeated by it in the 17th century AD Even perplexed 20th and 21st century scientists and intellectuals have swarmed over it without result |

If you use distilled water, instead of regular 'contaminated' water, the hot & cold controlled experiment will both freeze at the same velocity. It isn't the water that is freezing first, it is the contaminants in the water that freeze, and the water then freezes 'around' them. If you don't believe me, distill some water and perform the experiment yourself. All you need is a kitchen equipped with a tap (faucet for you yanks), a kettle & a fridge. Enjoy ... :) |

Also when a liquid boils it causes the liquid to circulate inside of the container. Now the reason I think that causes the water to freeze faster is because of the amount of molecules that are directly touching the cold air as opposed to only the water on top getting direct contact and then cooling the other molecules below it. At least that is the only logical explanation I can think of. |

The temperature then remains constant at the freezing point while the water crystallizes. Once the water is completely frozen, its temperature continues to fall. This is why snow caves and igloos are warmer than a rock cave. As the water freezes, it gives off heat. |

Thats why you see bubbles forming well before it actually boils. These removed gasses can no longer interfere with the formation of crystals...mystery solved and yes I am a scientist damn it. |

Inertia is a wonderful thing. you owe me a new scale and 2 new tiles to my bathroom floor "I have felt despair many times in my life, but I do not keep a chair for it." ~Dr. Clarissa Pinkola Estes Today is a gift, that is why it is called "The Present" “When an opponent declares, “I will not come over to your side,” I calmly say, “Your child belongs to us already… What are you? You will pass on. Your descendants, however, now stand in the new camp. In a short time they will know nothing else but this new community.” - Adolf Hitler “If you want to tell people the truth, make them laugh, otherwise they'll kill you.” -Oscar Wilde Have a nice day, may God bless you :D |

Almost exactly the same as electric potential difference which is measured in volts and the great it is the greater the force, and the heat flows much like in a short circuit. I soo stoned so sorry my the typos and bad grammar. |
