FACE IT!! In America prisons are a HUGE part of our economy. They are BIG BUSINESS. The cost of courts, lawyers, prosecutors, defense counsel, etc., has put the law and simple fairness out of the reach of all but the very well-to-do.

It costs, on average, almost fifty thousand dollars per year to keep someone incarcerated in a Federal Prison. A bit less per year in some state prisons and about the same in others. The prison guards are now known as "correctional officers" and they've unionized and their collective bargaining agreements have turned their lowly jobs into well paying, well funded positions that many states now cannot afford any longer!

The ONLY way to get out of these agreements is to privatize the prison system (which has been tried with dubious success) or to reduce the number of people behind bars and hence the numbers of "officers" needed to keep them there.

The US has a higher percentage of it's population in prison at any given time than almost any other country on earth! Something is BADLY wrong with this picture. BADLY WRONG!

So if the result of going off this Fiscal Cliff is a closure of prisons for simple cost savings - then it's beginning to look like a better an better deal every day! To get non-violent crimes out of prisons and into other types of programs based in a community would make sense! Putting kids in prison for possession of a few ounces or less of Marijuana - as was common during the "war on drugs" that we have so badly lost - is absurd. The loss of productive years, the loss of creative minds and the fact is that kids once sent to prison tend to get on the "repeat track" and some will spend the rest of their lives in and out of various institutions. Maybe the US not being able to do such absurd things for economic reasons begins to make sense after all??

Jails don't hold murderers and rapists. Jails hold thieves, drunks, and drug addicts (just like the mall or the movie theater). Prisons are all privatized now. Nothing to worry about.

Most prisoners are in for drugs. End the Drug War on citizens, and empty the jails.

Depends on how much they need soldiers.
They should release everyone with minor drug offenses. Keep the violent criminals.

More recruits with criminal records, including felony convictions, are being allowed to join the Army and Marine Corps as the armed services cope with a dwindling pool of volunteers during wartime.

The military routinely grants waivers to take in recruits who have criminal records, medical problems or low aptitude scores that would otherwise disqualify them from service. Most are moral waivers, which include some felonies, misdemeanors, and traffic and drug offenses.

Defense Department statistics show that the number of Army and Marine recruits needing waivers for felonies and serious misdemeanors, including minor drug offenses, has grown since 2003. Some recruits may get more than one waiver.

Even the military has had to admit that we are arresting too many people for too many petty things.
