How many mass killings did they have to start with? The answer is 15, dating back to 1860. Two of these were after the Port Arthur killings, one of which involved mass murder by arson. Only three involve weapons that are inaccurately called "Assault Rifles", a Mini-14 used by Joseph Schwab to murder five people in 1987, an M-14 used in the Hoddle Street massacre, also in '87, and an AR-15 and FN-FAL used in the Port Arthur murders in 1996. Of these, the M-14 clone and the FN-FAL are 7.62x51 calibre weapons that are classified as battle rifles and are considerably heavier than the AR-15 or Mini-14. In the Hoddle Street massacre the shooter also used a Ruger 10-22 .22 calibre rifle and a 12 gauge shotgun. The weapons used in the other killings range from muzzle-loading rifles, shotguns to pistols, large knives and fire. All told, 223 people have been killed in mass killings in Australia since 1860. 47 of these with "Assault Weapons".
Would not having these weapons have made much difference in the commission of these crimes? Probably not. After reading the accounts of the Port Arthur Massacre, I was struck by the fact that the reason that lunatic was able to kill so many people was because no one had any means with which to resist. He shot unarmed people that were only trying to escape. Even while he was reloading no one made a move to stop him, although there were people within ten feet of him when his weapon was empty.If one or more had been armed they could have put him down before he killed so many people. As far as weaponry, he was shooting at extremely close range, no more than a few feet, all his long range shots were misses, so he would have done just as much damage with a couple of revolvers.
Because of the rarity of mass killings, and the fact that there have been two since that did not involve 'Assault Weapons', one used fire as a weapon and killed 15, then I would say that the "47%" drop is statistically insignificant.
