Re: Inspired by Trinity's generosity I will match his offer...
Ok, here is my story. I've been sitting for an hour trying to decide if I should post this but here it goes.

I use to own a small business but my father got sick, had a stroke and then we also found out he has cancer. He was living in another state than me.
I closed my business and took a little money I saved to by a raggedy fixer-upper near my father.

I just got married in June, and my spouse and I live in the house I bought for next to nothing.

Problem is we don't have the money to fix the house. We don't have heat and we use a large plastic tarp to try and keep some of the cold air out. Our bathroom doesn't have a sink or a real floor. Also we do not have a kitchen. And to make matters worse, part of the roof started blowing off due to hurricane Sandy.

I just got some really old kerosene heaters from a neighbor because our electric bill is so high from running some space heaters to keep warm. Just got the shut off notice.

Even though all of that is really dim, the real problem we are having right now is that our house tax bill is due by monday (the end of the year). We don't won't to loose the little piece of house we have.
We are young and we are trying to do the right thing, but the cold is really taking a toll on us.

If you think we are worthy Brief than we would truly truly appreciate your help.hf

FYI most states split the property taxes in half. First half not delinquent till April or May, second half in the fall. Did you pay cash for the house, can't get home loans on crappy fixer uppers, at least not around here.

I feel for you, cold time of the year. Another trick to stay warm is put a tent up INSIDE of your house. Not ideal but will keep you a bit warmer. Water pipes tend not to freeze until low teens or single digit weather, I know that from personal experience. I hope the info helps you.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 25007716

Yes, I bought the house cash. It was a foreclosure. Not sure about split taxes as this is my first house. We got a letter saying that if we didn't pay then the matter would be forwarded to another place. Not sure where the other place is but I know that has to be bad....Putting a ten in the house is not really ideal, the house has 2 floors. We finished one room (the one we sleep in) and we put up insulation, but there are so many cracks and holes where the cold air can still get it.
And you're right before we can get a home loan it at least has to be functioning better. Then we could probably get one to finish it. Right now half of every paycheck goes into fixing on this house. But old man winter has no mercy.

We put an old electric stove in the basement just in case the temps really get down where we have to worry about pipes freezing. But again the electric bills are getting out of control.

Thanks so much for the support hf

It could have very easily backfired on me, but since it spread to others giving I have to reconsider my position on anonymous giving, although it still has its place :)

 Quoting: BRIEF

Just wanted to give you some kudos on this one... all of you helping others in need!

I had sort of lost hope this year. So many have seemed so self absorbed and downright mean in all too many cases... but this... Seeing this has reminded me of the goodness still to be found in humanity!

Thank you... Trinity, Brief and Fire Watch, for starting it and all the rest of you for picking the vibe up and running with it!!!

(especially you, justanothergranny! I look forward to meeting you and hubs one day soon!)

Geez! I've shed more sorrowful/joyful tears tonight than in the last 20 years!

(Thank goodness I do Not feel the need to go spit, etc. Thanks also for the laughs Brief! lol)

I posted this here: Thread: Brief's match to Trinity' christmas presents (Page 3)

But I wanted to share my appreciation to everyone who has done so much to help those in need. Thank you to all of you!

Pocket change doesn't mean brief is not an asshole, which he most certainly is
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 6837211

Yeah but he's our asshole so shut the fuck up!!!
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 30914912

Yes... love him or hate him, he's our Brief. I happen to love him. He has some very dry wit which I adore and although many find him crass and uncouth, he's just "Brief and to the Point" and I wouldn't want him any other way. I loves you, Brief. You make me waste more coffee with some of your one liners than any person I've ever met on these forums and this isn't the first time you've been generous. I remember a certain GLP'er that crushed his leg and a few other things falling off a roof a few years back and you were there to help. RT. RememberThis was his name. I miss him :(

I'm so moved by the generosity and amazing humanity I have had the privilege to witness over these past few days. Never have I been part of an online community that cares SO much for those of us who make and call this our online home. Sure, there have been trolls and we love them too, but over all...Wow... just Wow, people.

I wish I had the words to tell you all how proud of you I am, how touched I am, and how grateful I am to have the opportunity to get to know you all. I look forward to many years here with all of you and one day, when my life is a bit improved, I'll try to offer more than just comforting words and anecdotal stories.

You all are beautiful. Simply beautiful :) Seeing this selfless giving has been the best Christmas present I've had in years. Thank you - from the bottom of my little pea-pickin' heart!

Oh my... I have tears of joy and I need another box of Kleenex. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all of us and may this new year bring us all closer together so that we can get about the work of fixing our broken planet. :)

Since 2004 (count the years!) I have worked with a remarkable Lady from Austria to educate people regarding five biological laws that were discovered by a Dr. Geerd Hamer. She is the author of a huge website (www.learninggnm.com) that is a treasure of knowledge in matters that touch all of us - health - and the intricate synchronicity of psyche, brain and organs.

I am her amanuensis, her webmaster, and administrator and I have worked at this task for the past many years, sometimes 14 hours a day - and without remuneration - simply because that's how I know I can make a difference in this world - that's how I can help humanity.

It would be nice to receive just a little help and recognition of what we have accomplished here. This coming year, I will be 76 years young and, despite the evident medical resistance we encounter here and there, I am blessed to be doing work that might not be financially rewarding - but it gives me dignity and a purpose in life (what's left of it for me).

I wish you abundant health and happiness in 2013!

Re: Inspired by Trinity's generosity I will match his offer...
Brief,

There is a little girl who goes to school with my daughter. She is 8 yrs old and has Leukemia. Her family has put donation boxes all over town because they cannot afford her treatments. Plus the mother hasn't been able to work, since she must be with her 24/7

I have donated a bit, and will match your amount, if you choose my story.

I know it would be hard to know if I was really using the money for that purpose. I could take pictures or a video of me physically putting the money into her donation box.

Just a thought man, it just breaks my heart to see a little girl my daughters age have to suffer like that.
 Quoting: *HEISENBERG*

Thank you Brief, your generosity will do soo much for this family. I will match what you have donated...actually I was thinking that giving them a check for 666.66 might be a bit odd, so I will make it an even 700.

Please know I think this is incredible, my daughter was pretty upset about it when she found out, and it really has been tugging at my heart. No child should have to go through this. Hopefully this eases the stress and pressure they are undoubtedly under.

cheers
 Quoting: *HEISENBERG*

Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. 7 Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. 8 And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work. 9 As it is written:
