I donate all kinds of clothing to the church down the street. They have a clothing bank and give it away once per week. I just leave it on their back step at night. Been doing it for at least 10 years. They have no idea that I'm doing it.

Also give cash and canned goods to local food bank and donations at Christmas to the Salvation Army.

Good for you! I'm sure those families are very appreciative. hf Now back to helping those still in need!

I was thinking...The Only A Dollar & Only 15 Dollar stores are a good way to also get personal/hygene items...And small little gifts to be put into boxes being mailed out...It would just be something small too show someone cares...And give the boxes a more warm personal touch

Natasha, you make me smile all the time! I might can come up with some of those sandals you are asking about....my daughter has the same size foot and she might have some gently used sexy sandals she does not use. I will check asap. Happy Holidays...

I can definitely do this. At M.D. Anderson Cancer ctr this is what alot of the volunteers do....we have basically lived there for for over a year going through cancer treatments and Stem Cell transplants (same thing Robin Roberts is going through) and you tend to find that your money is quickly eaten up by exorbitant parking fees, (even if you pay up front for a month at a time) and food and the little things you need as in personal hygiene items.
I think this is a great idea. I cannot stress how thankful we are when we go there and they have people there so happy to offer to share what they have on hand. Put my name in the hat to help with this one. Blessings to all!

Re: Helping out needy families with gently used clothing and toys. Do you need help or can you offer help?
I'd love to be able to help out everyone who needs it, but financially I'm no better off than most of you here. Still, I consider myself blessed to have a home and healthy family and parents who can sometimes help out.

Trin, I see a lot of parents saying they weren't able to give their children much this holiday season, and I was wondering if we could maybe create a "co-op" of sorts to help these folks out?

I'm located in Texas but can ship out of state. I don't have money to buy new clothes and toys but have many avenues which would allow me to collect gently used items, plus my own, that can go to anyone in need.

If you're a parent of small children in need of clothing, or used toys, please post here and try to include an email address where you can be reached.

If you're a donor, maybe you can help a family in need.

I love what Trin started and Brief and FW followed... I do believe that although it's great to give anonymously, it's even better to inspire others to give.

First of all, helping others is noble, but the problem is in determining what kind of people they are . . . are they decent, clean, hard-working? Do they smoke? Do drugs? Drink alcohol? Are they reckless and promiscuous? Will they take any money given to them and use it on cigarettes, drugs, or alcohol?

The ONLY way I would help someone is if they are genuinely down on their luck, dealing with adverse situations through no fault of their own and just need someone to give them a boost with NO expectation of repayment . . . pay it forward.

But I will not help someone who is stupid and reckless and selfish.

As for people who cannot afford to give their kids even one present, did it ever occur to any of you people here that you are condoning that kind of thing? These idiots will continue to breed, knowing full well they can't take of their kids - because SOMEONE ELSE WILL. Yes, it's sad and terrible for the children, but the problem has to start being addressed at the core - which is that some people should NEVER be allowed to breed.

America is a shameful nation for rewarding breeders, for allowing women to pop out one kid after another and then let them mooch off taxpayers.

NO ONE NEEDS MORE THAN ONE CHILD. America must adopt a one-child policy by taxing and legally penalizing anyone having more than one baby.

Last year I helped someone who was not married, had no children, but was down on his/her luck. (I do know the gender of this person.) I never met him/her....still haven't. I did it all by long distance. I did not send money for the reasons you mentioned... because I didn't know this person... but I did send about $1500 worth of new merchandise and food.

I believe it was much appreciated, and I was so happy to do it. I'm glad to know that this person now has a new outlook on life.

You're correct that sometimes you just don't know. I believed this certain person was sincere, and it turned out I was right. He/she just lost their way. You just have to take that chance to help someone, and it might make a big difference in a life. I'm so glad I did it.

I stopped giving to some charities because I have no idea where the money is going. Some of these charities have employees who make a six figure salary. I would rather spend my money on a person or families in need.

Re: Helping out needy families with gently used clothing and toys. Do you need help or can you offer help?
This is a great idea! There was a lady, I believe in Germany, that had a store called "give and take" in German of course. She did a lot of good with it.

Maybe we could have similar post....give and take or wants/needs and give away? Something like that.

I have size 9 little boys winter boots Columbia black but I need size 11 or even 12 little girls or boys winter boots. She's a little girl but could wear either, with boys it's harder can't have them wearing pink/purple, they would be traumatised. LOL

Only problem is shipping, I think usps has if it fits it ships? ranging in price $5 and up.

My email is [email protected]

I am on Long Island/NY for anyone else that needs help locally.

Seriously, someone doesn't deserve help if they smoke or drink alcohol? Promiscuous? What does that mean, sex outside of marriage? Does that mean they don't deserve help?

Rewarding "breeders" Whoa, now what, abortion is better than birth? "NO ONE NEEDS MORE THAN ONE CHILD" You seriously didn't just write that!

Your post just kept getting better! "America must adopt a one-child policy" "tax and legally penalize anyone having more than one baby" ???

^^^THIS^^^ This act is meant to inspire not just the parents, but especially the children. I believe in planting a seed of kindness if you expect children to grow up and be kind. Period.
I understand your point of view and respectfully disagree - I believe little ones are innocent and a blessing. FYI None of the parents who have contacted me have more than 2-3 kids and not one of those parents has asked for a single thing for themselves.

Hey old friend! I miss ya! hugs

Same here, although I haven't been able to buy myself a lot last year or 2, I have enough and I can't complain. I'm letting go of a lot of stuff and kids stuff, toys that we simply don't need. Like another poster noted, I'm a bit weary of donating to large organizations who have to pay staff, etc.
I'm a proud Texan but my state boundary line doesn't keep me from extending help to those beyond it.
I think your awesome stuff can find a happy home for sure!

The only poor people in the USA want to be poor. Giving them stuff only enables them. Stop feeding poverty.

My kids grew up with used toys and clothes. They wore used clothing until they were in their teens. I bought clothes and shoes for myself at thrift shops, too, until we could afford the new. It was great!

Word of caution. There will always be non-needy people with a hand out looking to re-sell these clothing. I heard some stories here in Coney Island of people looking for new w/ tag items only after many of my neighbors donated clothing for a clothing drive after Hurricane Sandy hit. Give them to people you know. You'd be surprised how many poor people have XBox, PS3, big screen tv's, etc. I find it's the working poor that struggle the most and the just under middle class. I speak from experience as I grew up poor in the projects - trust me, we did well for poor people and could have done better if the money was not spent on liquor, drugs and lottery.

Re: Helping out needy families with gently used clothing and toys. Do you need help or can you offer help?
I have some boys 3T and 4T items and little girls size 5-6 items. I have to look to be sure, but I'm almost positive I have a boys 3T winter coat with snow pants and boots (have to check the size, maybe 8T). Let me know if you know of anybody who needs them.
I could also go through my husbands stuff and thin his closet out.. size XL. I would do the same with mine, but I lost a lot of weight and hardly have anything.
Just send me a PM and let me know. I'm in Northern VA or I could mail it.. if it fits it ships, right ;)

If you know of anybody this way, I have a brand new microwave that nobody will take as a donation.

Ok then....I have been reading this thread and even though we are all constantly being hit up for donations to this or that for some reason your plea has reached me.

Maybe it's cause you are in Texas! I'm in Dallas....

Don't know if you are in this area but if so and you need any "local" type help just let me know.

As far as filling needs let me know what you need and let me see what I can do to make it happen.....yes, it's as simple as that!

Thanks for caring!

Re: Helping out needy families with gently used clothing and toys. Do you need help or can you offer help?
Honestly, really, listen up.

Some have piped in with some terrible comments here.

First of all, I do not believe anyone is going to ask for items in order to "resell" them.
Second of all, things are tough for many, even the ones offering like me, most likely are having a hard time financially. This is an act of generosity, because quite frankly, it feels very good to give to those less fortunate.

Please, don't take the pleasure out of this thread by bringing up peoples motives.

The only motivation here is to help even just one person.

I wholeheartedly believe those taking part in this thread.
Most of us have the desire to help as well as the need to ask for help.

Thank you.

me also! Go local!! Why ship? Thrift stores are the best! $3 for a dress. Give local. People in need will find the $3 dresses and much more!
