Record 8.8 Million Receive Disability Benefits
The number of individuals collecting disability benefits has hit a record high 8,827,795, according to new figures released from the Social Security Administration. On average, beneficiaries receive a $1,130.34 monthly check.

The explosion of individuals now applying for federal disability means applications are being awarded without proper vetting. A congressional report examining a sample of 300 cases found that over a quarter of them “failed to properly address insufficient, contradictory or incomplete evidence.”

Out of 333,000,000 people, I think that number is low. Most of which get SSI and is a paltry amount of money. Just my two cents.

Read that too. What did the military spend? How many IOU's are owed to the SS trust fund? We have over 2.6 trillion dollars in the SS trust fund.

I am one of those 8 million. I have diabetes caused by heart medication. I was 35 years old when a virus attacked my heart. The medication was used to keep me alive. I can no longer work. I am 54 years old. I have worked since I was 16, served my country for two years and yes had time to raise my son and take care of my family. I was approved for disability in two weeks because I worked while I could have been disabled for over 15 years. WE need to get the blood suckers who have never paid a dime in the system off the payroll. They are hurting people like me who worked most of my life.

Don't ever apologize for receiving funds you paid into called INSURANCE!. Thank you for your service. Hope your getting your V.A. pay Too!

Your story reads like my own and I won't give a damn who critiques me.

I served my country and once out.... created hundreds of jobs that created job skills. I gave til I could not give anymore.

The reason I'm on a website posting my thoughts....I have nothing better to do because I can barely walk and function.

But while I'm here....I'm going to bring some cheer to others. It's not all bad.

No pissing contest for me, but I am beyond physical repair.

I have diabetic neuropathy, insulin resistance, thalassemia, idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy, obstructive sleep apnea, svere osteoarthritis of the right shoulder-- shoulder being replaced for the second time, and I am not severely obese- weigh only 200lbs so kiss my ass-- I cannot physically work. I have done my time sorry about your mother. You must be a real son of bitch

I was brought up in a family that relied on government assistance.

My parents divorced when we were young--my dad had custody of my brother, my two sisters and me.

My father met another woman who had 4 children of her own.
In order to cope with the expense of such a large household, they lived with each other for a few years before finally deciding to marry.

My stepmother was collecting government benefits and even though she felt ashamed for having to live this way, it was the only way we could survive.

There was a time when legitimate people were ashamed to be on disability or welfare.

I understand that many in this economy are truly in need and out of work for honest reasons, but I know that there are many who are conning and cunning when it comes to receiving government handouts and I agree, that those "blood suckers" need to stop.

Towards the end of my husband's life, we had to go on food stamps and he signed up for disability.

I remember all the paper work, all the questions, all the phone calls. We had to give account of every cent that came into our household. My life was an open book to the government and I didn't like it one bit.

One of the first phone calls I made after my husband's passing, and my period of grief, was to the S.S. office to stop ALL assistance.

They sent me one more check after he passed away and I kept it for the longest time, up until last week. I finally tore it up and threw it away.

There are people who need it and they should receive it. The ones that get me are the kids receiving disability benefits. Why? Don't their parents work? OK, I can see a child who must have round-the-clock care, but I'm talking kids with ADHD, a speech impediment, a neurological disorder (bi-polar), or a specific learning disability. The parents know how to game the system (it's almost always the black ones). They purposely feed junk to the kids, keep them up late, refuse to let them do homework. Then, they can bring in grades and test scores showing their little darling is behind his peers and qualifies for SPED and free money. Woo hoo!!! I see this on a regular basis here in Georgia and it pisses me off to no end. Those kids could keep up if they had somebody who really gave a rat's ass about them and not just the money.

Were in a new age of new diseases or unrecognized diseases. However, we have have been living in an unnatural world now for fifty year going.

By that I mean, our water is not pure, our food in not pure and we eat and live in the fast lane. There are far more breakdowns in our modern way of living that it sludges forward an unnatural way of living.

disability is for those who pay into the system. Fuck all those who have not paid into the system. Its like living in the floodplain and getting a new house every three years because you are flooded out. These schmos must be given an incentive to work if they have not paid their insurance stopp paying them to sit on their asses

Please enlighten us about how much better you are than others because you tore up a SS check. I'm interested. People pay into a fund in case they become disabled.

What's your point?
 Quoting: PokerFace

I would have responded sooner, but I received a phone call that kept me occupied up until now.

My point?

There is no point, just the truth.

The truth is--is that there are some who are legitimately unable to work and need financial assistance in order to survive. They are not the cause of any disease or crippling disability that happened upon them and we shouldn't disgrace them for receiving help.

Then there are some who, because of their own stupidity or lack of personal responsibility, become disabled and need financial assistance.

My husband's disabilities were self-inflicting.

He did work hard and did pay his taxes but he should've paid more attention to taking care of his health and stopping his addictions.

Eventually, as his diseases progressed, the government became the solution to our financial woes.

I can understand how it can become easy for one to rely on others.

As our marriage life was changing from bad to worse, I was fighting not to hate my husband for what I saw was happening to the flaw in his character.

Once he realized that receiving help from the government lightened his load of personal responsibility, and lessened the stress that was happening in our marriage, he grew to accept it as being a normal part of our life.

You start to decieve yourself by becoming a liar and lazier.

I guess what you can read into this is that I despised my husband for what he became, but I depised the government more for being one of the major sources of his downfall.

One of the other sources was his doctors. It was very easy for him to get prescription drugs.

You mention quoting scripture.

I am not ashamed to say that I'm a true follower of Christ.
Throughout all the struggles, I have maintained my faith, only because of God's holding power.

Your implication of me being better than others because I tore up a SS check caused me to sigh.

I tore up that check and felt good about it because it was my own way of saying, "see, I don't need you. I survived, I survive and will to continue to survive, God willing and with HIS help".
However, I consider my life worth nothing to me; my only aim is to finish the race and complete the task
the Lord Jesus has given me—the task of testifying to the good news of God’s grace. Acts 20:24
