At the moment it is a faint object, visible only in sophisticated telescopes as a point of light moving slowly against the background stars. It doesn't seem much – a frozen chunk of rock and ice – one of many moving in the depths of space. But this one is being tracked with eager anticipation by astronomers from around the world, and in a year everyone could know its name.

By late November it will be visible to the unaided eye just after dark in the same direction as the setting Sun.

Comet ISON is expected to draw millions into the dark to witness a flyby expected to outshine that of even Hale-Bopp (pictured) in 1997.

Remarkably Ison might not be the only spectacular comet visible next year. Another comet, called 2014 L4 (PanSTARRS), was discovered last year and in March and April it could also be a magnificent object in the evening sky. 2013 could be the year of the great comets.

It’s out beyond Jupiter’s orbit still, now, but it’s heading for a close encounter with the sun in 2013. Called C/2012 S1 (ISON) by astronomers, its orbital characteristics indicate it might become a very bright object in Earth’s sky, beginning in November 2013. If so, all of us around the globe should be able to see it late next year.

That comet will be so cool. I hope I can be around to see it next November. Sounds like it will be better than Halley's which was pretty lame considering all the hype.

It's suppose to be visible for up to 3 months, everyone should be able to see it by late summer, all the way up to November 29th, when it will be at it's brightest!!
