In my experience I didn't make it that far, I was stopped before I got there and told to go back but thought I'd mention it since the tunnel seemed to go through space. Just my first thought, sorry there's no science whatsoever behind it. "May your electricity go out a second before the shit hits the fan." -Conspiracy Theorist's Blessing |
Dr. Astro Senior Forum Moderator User ID: 1524705 United States 12/29/2012 05:53 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | These are satellites in the Palomar Sky Survey images used by google to construct their all-sky mosaic. The images were recorded decades ago, long before google came along and decided to use it. Google sky is NOT a primary source of ANY sky survey data. No serious researcher uses google sky for the purpose of retrieving sky survey images; google's processing for the mosaic degrades the quality of the original imagery (they also did not curate each of the film plates for problems and substitute with alternatives when necessary; there were other plates they could have used to eliminate the satellites from the data at these coordinates, but you get what you pay for which is nothing in this case). Quoting: Dr. Astro The Palomar all-sky survey was conducted with monochromatic film designed for various wavelengths (red, blue, and infrared light in the case of POSS2). Google therefore used multiple plates to construct their color images, which results in severe artifacts when problems occur with individual film plates. These satellites passed through the field of view while exposing red film plate XP548. Here's the resulting image from the raw original film plate of the coordinates from the video, without all the processing and additional compression google did: [link to i319.photobucket.com] They're satellites. One of them faded out within the field of view as it went into orbital sunset. The exposure was 70 minutes long, thus due to the rotation of earth orbital sunset was able to occur for one satellite when it passed through, but it may have been too early in the evening for the other to experience orbital sunset in the same field of view if it passed through earlier in the exposure. They're not actually near the sun either. Again, google is not providing live images, it's just rendering a picture of the sun onto the mosaic where the sun would be in the sky for the point in time the program is set to. These are very old images from preexisting sky surveys. |
