people saying that we are trading our freedom away yada yada. Have you ever took the time to think that maybe these are people that either do not use guns and have no need for them, along with people who have too many guns and are trading the extras in. Along with what some of the other glprs have stated, are stolen guns or broken ones. It's not like they are taking our guns and we have no protection. They are just taking a very small amount that people have stocked. Gun sales are BOOMING in the U.S., so to assume that we are trading our rights away is absurd.

True. At the Baltimore City trade in after the CT shooting the guns looked like crap.

If my bro wasn't coming to get his legal short barrel I'd probably turn it in for 100$ since I can't shoot the damn thing without injuring myself...lol!

Just because they say they are not "asking any questions" that does not mean they are not checking them. Atleast in Maryland they do and we have been doing gun turn in as long as I can remember around here.

So it has started.....
ABC report

<snip>

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa brought forward the date of a gun buyback event following the December 14 shooting at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut, that left 26 people dead.

The Boxing Day buyback saw 1,016 weapons, including 41 rifles, handed over.

Gun owners could take their arms to one of two locations in return for a $100 grocery store gift card for handguns, rifles and shotguns, or a $200 card for automatic weapons.

"Cities and states must join with the federal government to do everything we can, as quickly as we can, to keep our community safe and to get deadly weapons off our streets," Mr Villaraigosa said.

"It is absolutely critical to provide Angelinos with concrete actions they can take today to make our city safer tomorrow."

Los Angeles' police chief Charlie Beck said 8,000 weapons had been handed in since the program started in 2009.

Long lines of cars formed as Los Angeles gun owners turned in weapons.

Sergeant Rudy Lopez from the LAPD said the fact that police were asking no questions was a key incentive.

"See that? That's a silencer," he said, pointing to an assault weapon.

"That's illegal. We didn't say anything."

<end snip>
yeah, long lines of cars..... fiscal?.... hungry?..... or is it all lovely pre-nation wide buy-back propoganda? lol

The Gun is Civilization.

Human beings only have two ways to deal with one another: reason and force. If you want me to do something for you, you have a choice of either convincing me via argument, or force me to do your bidding under threat of force. Every human interaction falls into one of those two categories, without exception. Reason or force, that's it.

In a truly moral and civilized society, people exclusively interact through persuasion. Force has no place as a valid method of social interaction, and the only thing that removes force from the menu is the personal firearm, as paradoxical as it may sound to some.

When I carry a gun, you cannot deal with me by force. You have to use reason and try to persuade me, because I have a way to negate your threat or employment of force.

The gun is the only personal weapon that puts a 100-pound woman on equal footing with a 220-pound mugger, a 75-year old retiree on equal footing with a 19-year old gang banger, and a single guy on equal footing with a carload of drunk guys with baseball bats. The gun removes the disparity in physical strength, size, or numbers between a potential attacker and a defender.

There are plenty of people who consider the gun as the source of bad force equations. These are the people who think that we'd be more civilized if all guns were removed from society, because a firearm makes it easier for a [armed] mugger to do his job. That, of course, is only true if the mugger's potential victims are mostly disarmed either by choice or by legislative fiat--it has no validity when most of a mugger's potential marks are armed.

People who argue for the banning of arms ask for automatic rule by the young, the strong, and the many, and that's the exact opposite of a civilized society. A mugger, even an armed one, can only make a successful living in a society where the state has granted him a force monopoly.

Then there's the argument that the gun makes confrontations lethal that otherwise would only result in injury. This argument is fallacious in several ways. Without guns involved, confrontations are won by the physically superior party inflicting overwhelming injury on the loser.
People who think that fists, bats, sticks, or stones don't constitute lethal force watch too much TV, where people take beatings and come out of it with a bloody lip at worst. The fact that the gun makes lethal force easier works solely in favor of the weaker defender, not the stronger attacker. If both are armed, the field is level.

The gun is the only weapon that's as lethal in the hands of an octogenarian as it is in the hands of a weight lifter. It simply wouldn't work as well as a force equalizer if it wasn't both lethal and easily employable.

When I carry a gun, I don't do so because I am looking for a fight, but because I'm looking to be left alone. The gun at my side means that I cannot be forced, only persuaded. I don't carry it because I'm afraid, but because it enables me to be unafraid. It doesn't limit the actions of those who would interact with me through reason, only the actions of those who would do so by force. It removes force from the equation... and that's why carrying a gun is a civilized act.

Look at all those 'First Families' around the globe...It is time for them to lead by example, and the example they are sending all those they influence is, you need armed security...Obama agrees by his actions...he has fully automatic guns protecting him and the fam..and he has less chance of being blown away than the masses who employ him. There is one in hospital (Bush) now doing the world a favour by dying of old age in a first class hospital suite...and he will still have armed security until they drop it in the ground somewhere away from the Prole graves.

Re: WOAH MAN!!!! Swapping Guns for groceries in US report in Aus 27/12/12........
Here on the Gold Coast I can go out after dark [unarmed] without fear.

Dear CP.. as u know......

______

I lived and worked in the states '88-'90 so I've seen it from the inside. Had fun with [hand] guns during lunch hour out in the sticks of Virginia. When I lived in LA you could hear the "pops" at new years eve and thought twice about being outdoors.
Back here in OZ a few years later we got our guns took away but mostly they were rifles 'cause hand guns never really were in vogue. In fact gun culture was almost non existent so it wasn't no big deal getting "disarmed"

But of course if you want a gun of any variety.. a whisper and a fist full of dollars will satiate that desire but most of us live on the coast and a gun is something you keep in your quiver of surfboards. Most Ozians admire our yankee cousins but at the same time consider the country half nuts.

And it makes my blood boil when I hear Merka is "the greatest country in the world" shouted from the hill tops and city blocks... Town squares. The freedom and liberty yo'll proclaim is yours and yours ALONE is naught but hot air and wind from a nation with it's nose pressed up against the glass of a 36 inch TV screen.

The great dream and the wild frontier are long gone like the buffalo and wagon.. YET you persist in the false doctrine that the gun will protect and any amount of persuasion otherwise draws hackles of outrage and condemnation especially to any god danged 'ferner' who would dare to question, what; in the civilised world, is considered as outdated as is the muscat and the flint.

I might add. Gun control came to us some 16 year ago. I note most Ozians are not behind bars nor are we less free than thee. ;)

I trust my comments will be considered civil.

Thank you.

More propaganda from the ANTI-2nd amendment crowd. Taking every opportunity to paint a picture that warfare class weapons are everywhere.

I seriously doubt that despite offering $200 for a $2000-$5000 (or more) "automatic" weapon that they actually collected any. They are extremely rare and more then likely if you own one you know what it is and would never be that stupid.

I'm sure that 99% of all the weapons these idiots traded for well below market value were just regular rifles and handguns.

Re: WOAH MAN!!!! Swapping Guns for groceries in US report in Aus 27/12/12........
While I agree with a previous post about these guns most likely being stolen or broken.... One thought came to mind here.

Most guns values are MUCH higher than a measly 100-200 bucks. Obtaining an automatic weapon alone can cost someone thousands.

So, gun agenda aside..... are these people stupid?! What's next? Trade in your car that blue books for 2400 and recieve a free bicycle? Honestly... that's the stupidist stuff I have read in a while.

The Gunfree-Zone Brits are now dipping into the public purse to the tune of 18 500 000 pounds to tackle their burgeoning knife and gun crime problem...probably the majority to be outsourced to Private companies like GS4 for their 'advisory' input, and probably heavily invested into by all British MP's...Crime does pay. These are the real benefits of turning the masses into victims - see how the Pigs operate. If you did a book check of Camoron's or Ozzies finance diddlings there would be a connection...I know it.

i saw a vid on the huffpost with a cop in the station holding up some of the confiscated weapons. He had a WWII era German STG 44. These fetch a huge amount for gun collectors, if it's a geniou german made machine gun. And in this case it was a full auto that the guys grandfather had in the attic , a family member took it down and sold it for 200 bucks.

the video is on the huff post article

i nearly fell out of my chair

Curious to know the mindset and plans of all the LA gangs in that area now?
