Latest fiscal cliff warning: Milk prices could increase to $8 a gallon
The farm bill expired three months ago. Unless Congress passes legislation renewing federal support for agriculture programs, milk prices could spike to between $6 and $8 per gallon, according to some estimates.

Fifth-generation Weber County dairy farmer Ron Gibson is of two minds about the possibilities.

"It's really a double-edged sword. It would be nice to have $8 a gallon for milk. (Consumers) can't afford to do that long term," Gibson said. "The bigger concern we have is that it could kill demand for our product. How many people will quit buying milk and start buying something else?"

Milk is just part of the dairy market. If the price of milk goes up, so goes the price of cheese, ice cream, sour cream and other dairy products, he said.

Unless Congress resolves the stalemate over the farm bill by the end of the year, the federal government would have to follow a 1949 law that would require the U.S. Department of Agriculture to buy milk at roughly twice the current market price to maintain a stable market.

Re: Latest fiscal cliff warning: Milk prices could increase to $8 a gallon
Here is a more in-depth explanation of why this might happen:

Forget the fiscal crisis and the automatic budget cuts. Come Jan. 1, there is a threat that milk prices could rise to $6 to $8 a gallon if Congress does not pass a new farm bill that amends farm policy dating back to the Truman presidency.

The Senate passed a farm bill in July. A House version of the bill made it out of committee, but House leaders have yet to bring its version to the floor.

Under the current program, the government sets a minimum price to cover dairy farmers’ production costs. If the market price drops below that, the government buys dairy products from farmers to buoy prices and increase demand. Since milk prices have remained above that minimum price in recent years, dairy farmers usually do better by selling their products commercially rather than to the government.

But if 1949 rules go into effect, the government would be required to buy dairy products at around $40 per hundredweight — roughly twice the current market price —
to drive up the price of milk to cover dairy producers’ cost.

hi

This high price of oil will cause food prices to rise significantly since industrial agriculture is utterly dependent on oil from plowing, fertilizing, pesticides, harvesting, processing, to transport.

Couple this very real cost to the rush away from stocks into more tangible assets like commodities that are also traded in rapidly devaluing dollars. This speculation will lead to much higher food prices. Throw in more extreme weather, and we have a recipe for a major food crisis. Food will hit new all-time highs in 2013.

We don't need cow's milk. It's all advertising hype by the dairy board to get people to consume an unhealthy product.

ANALYSIS...

All this could have been avoided if the American public would have paid attention to what is going on instead of feeling sorry for each other.

I agree.

I don't drink much cow's milk anymore, I prefer almond milk.

In fact, many people are switching from cow's milk to a milk alternative, like almond milk, because of the health benefits.

When funds allow, we purchase organic milk, too. My son prefers it.

Otherwise, we purchase Bareman's brand, it has a good flavor and sells for around $2.50 a gallon.

I don't think I have ever seen that brand around here. We always go organic with milk. Only because we don't want our daughters to be subjected to all those hormones. Girls are growing up faster these days, and I firmly believe it's at least partly due to all the growth hormones the cows are fed.

Try raw milk, if you can get it. Raw milk has all the vitamins in tact, and the enzymes have not been deactivated by the heat of pasteurization or super-homogenization. More like like the milk I got when I was a kid!

PS. Studies have shown that even though a container of commercial milk says it has added Vitamin D, individual samples varied from zero to over double the amount on the label.
