Online Degree - worth getting or not?

Most people in the workforce have traditional degrees, and so there's a natural bias for applicants with those same degrees and suspicion toward those with 'alternate' degrees, but that doesn't mean you can't get a job with an online degree, just means you have to sell yourself harder.

The jobs in that feild that require no secondary education are simply the jobs that pay very little. You're looking at 10.00 - 17.00 an hour for these jobs. If you want to get into the feild in any serious matter, you'll need a degree. If I had an applicant come in waving around his online degree I may just laugh my ass off. Nothing worth doing is easy to do. If you want to make salary and help anyone on a professional level, put in the four to six years it takes to be respected. What's truly in an online degree? Absolutely nothing. If you get your hopes up with one, you'll be working cor someone who put in the extra time, rather than the other way around.

Here is a great college, 100% online, accredited and well respected. It is also very cheap compared to other colleges. Work at your own pace and take as big or little of a class load you want at the same price.

I have hired a number of people with online degrees in the past.

Lets talk reality -- most of the time an employer doesn't give a shit even what major the stupid degree is in let alone the school -- they just want you to HAVE ONE.

This is the college, its what you would call traditional, and the associates is transferable to a masters.

Its a ways from me so I could not travel there but it looks like it could all be done online.

I thought that for some time, I even looked at those "life experience degrees" but they just didn't seem legit.

Check to see if the college is accredited and what other institutions take its credits.

Those places like Phoenix, are just scams and ripoffs for dumb folk. Yes, sometimes people can get jobs with a 'degree' from them, but those are jobs they could have gotten without a degree. Everyone I've seen/talked to who has enrolled in those are basically SOL when there are few places that take their coursework seriously and then when they try to transfer to a real college program they have no credits and have to start over.

Go to a community college near you. It's generally waaay cheaper and the credits are real. You can find colleges here and there which are real accredited universities, and you can sign up for courses they offer that are completely online. Then you can transfer the credits in to whatever real school you want to get a degree from.

The above statement I tend not to agree with. I work in HR for a major company a degree is a degree the only time we tend to take notice is if it is from Harvard.

I know they seem to be a few times more expensive than a traditional or jc. I had a friend looking at one awhile back, and when all done and $20K in debt they would be making about $15. a hour, which after transportation and loan payment would have put them back at minimum wage.


This one I am looking at is about $5.K the others I believe are about $12K or more.

See if they let you do your exams online or if they have a policy of requiring proctored exams which are a pain in the arse to get done without costing time, money, and travel.

Wgu.edu is the way to go. Cheap and same accreditation as traditional colleges.

If I am reading it correctly, I believe there is still some state licensing involved when the course is over.

Anyone getting an online degree is a loser who loses even more.

Just go to an interview with your certificate once you pass and satch as your world falls silently apart as the ones whose real degree certs are chosen waaaaaay before you, but some companies that couldnt care less will employ you - to clean the toilets for those with degrees once they are done and to clean the place where there ingenious minds will work.

I highly recommend you do the online degree just so you can live pit the experience in the first 2000 job interviews you go to.

Don't get a job as there are far better ways to earn money. Go to school for the intellectual stimulation if that's your thing.

Yeah, you are probably right, not sure why anyone with a degree would work somewhere were the requirements are high school, and citizenship anyway.

I have allwayse been self sufficient, but I learn when the customer is gone, well you really cant sell anything. I dont expect even the "dope man" to be making out well in this economy, at least not as good as before.

I don't know for sure how places like Phoenix are viewed, but if you get an online degree from a brick and mortar school, I do not believe your transcripts will specify how you earned the degree. No one will know if you went to a real class or did an online class.

I think the perception of online degrees has changed. And you can always use it to your advantage in an interview or something because it can take a lot more self-motivation to log on and do classwork when there are a lot of other home distractions as opposed to sitting in a classroom. It takes a disciplined person to earn a degree at home.

Peer counselors without degrees have trouble making $20,000. An associates or even bachelors degree probably won't make much difference relative to the debt you'd take on. See if you can talk to someone at an actual hiring location and see what they suggest.

To others, yes it is brick and mortar, real accreditation, transferable credits to a masters all that. I believe by the cost a pell would actually pay for it so no real debt taken on.

The discipline another thing, three toddlers, all that comes with it. I do see this college in particular dosent have a high completion rate, and have wondered if it was too hard, or what else I might be missing.

If I have to tell you, then you should just get a job. Entrepreneurship is for creative people who don't need to be told what to do. There are at least as many opportunities in a bad economy as a good one, if not more.

hmmm, I did have a couple stores, a few traveling sales rigs, and a few employees, that didnt work out when the new "economy" came into being. Not sure what else I could do, the old create jobs, make a living thing seems pretty dead now.

Heck I even had a internet thing and some fellow in Germany stole my merchant account funds, and I am smart enough to see that it cost more to pay for ads for traffic than can be made now.
