Gallup: Record 74 percent oppose handgun ban

An unprecedented number of Americans support the right to own a handgun, despite the recent mass killings at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn., that have renewed the push for gun control.

Even with the killings in Newtown as a backdrop, a new Gallup poll shows 74 percent of Americans now support the right to possess a handgun, while just 24 percent would support a ban.

In fact, the Gallup poll is a near-perfect example of why passing gun control legislation will be difficult.

While a significant majority of Americans say they support new gun measures — 58 percent (up from 44 percent last year) — those same people can’t seem to come to an agreement when it comes to specific laws.

The existing laws are tough enough. Too tough.

How is it that congress thinks they have a mandate to pass any gun legislation? Obviously anti gun crowd is outnumbered.

You can logically conclude, the MAJORITY want MORE gun control, but the MAJORITY also feel that handguns are not the problem.

The question is though, what do the majority thing IS the problem?

Government agents and officials should have to abide by the SAME laws they pass and enforce on us. That's according to "the equal protection of the laws" (14th Amendment). Let's see what they support with equality. After all, they are our EMPLOYEES.

Also in that poll (but not included in the link) is that 51% oppose an assault-weapons ban.

I can do more damage with a pack of matches than with a gun. It's kind of a stupid idea to ban guns, it's just a tool. It can be used to hunt and feed yourself and keep you alive or it can be used to kill you. it's just a tool. Blame the people, blame society, but don't try to say guns are to blame and need to be banned for our security. it's ignorant.

And neither country had our history or anything even approaching the BOR, let alone the 2nd amendment, duh.

about the same number opposed the anti-terrorist bill proposed by bill clinton ...

both the patriot act and anti-terrorist bill were proposed twice and dismissed twice due to the obvious unconstitutional nature of the contents.

both were later passed within two weeks of a catastrophe.

I have contacted my Senators but I doubt they will say no to the Feinstein bill.

They will just keep sending kill squads out to random elementary schools across the country until the public gives in.

This is why they want to arm teachers.

But the law says the teachers can't have the same kinds of guns as the kill squads (6-shooter vs 100-round submachine gun).

So who wins in this fight?

Educate the kids/people properly and impeach all traitors in government. (Not necessarily in that order. :) )
