Housing and books too. Even at super expensive schools like California's UCLA Law School. Art? 60,000? Pad and Pencil = Priceless. OK, true story. There was this apartment complex (small one, like 80 units) in California. There was this guy (an artist of talent in outline--but in my opinion not in colors to be commercially acceptable) Anyway, nice guy, talented. Worked for the compex as a maintenance man. Part of his pay was a free apartment for him and his (kind of hippy) girlfreind who was a waitress at Big Boy on the overnight shift. He had no car (spent all of his pay on art supplies, and would beg $$ for more, because as you know this stuff can cost and gets used up.) His girlfreind walked--to save the planet (whales, dolphins, polar bears, I don't remember). So no car, free apartment, free money for an easy 40 hours of on call type work in a super pleasant beach environment. By the time the guy in in his late 30's he has a mega-portfolio of big and small and mediam peices (in colors I personally do not think are commercaily viable). So he asks the city, can he have an art show in the park for X peices. They say yes, buy only for less peices than he wants. So he buys the permit and sets up with the required amount, plus a few extras (skrew the man kind of thing you know). Anyway, haveing never displayed (or sold) before, (about 15 years of work) he sells about 10 peices in the $100 to $200 range (his est cost of some of them) But, But, But, He is seen by a lot of well to do people, (picked the right park and went door to door in million dollar + house neighborhood leaving flyers. So, he gets a gig to do an outdoor mural in Los Angeles on a building owned by someone who attened his showing. He made GOOD MONEY on this and hired a crew of other artists to help. Then, (last I spoke with him) he intended to spend every last dime he made on producing more art (the stuff he wanted to do, but couldn't afford) Now this man didn't have a fancy Phd after his name, and to many he was simply a lowly mainanence man without a car and a wife who walked to work. But digging deeper, whenever I delt with him I was dealing with an Artist (a working artist) who for part of his day handled maintainence at an apartment complex. I (and the art world in general) have more respect for this one ARTIST than a boatload of Phd's going over a cliff (do boats go over cliffs). Anyway, I'm not going to tell you his name, and if you pay some Phd $60,000, they just might tell yo about him. Then again maybe not, because he is not aq Liberal. Just something to think about. For YAH! |
